Varaldsøy – the pearl of Hardangerfjorden The pearl of Hardangerfjorden is a description the island rightly deserves. A summer day on the island when everything is in bloom is an experience. From the highest mountain on the island, Varden 600 masl, you can enjoy the view of what is perhaps Norway's most beautiful nature, especially Folgefonna and the mighty Kvinnheradsfjella that rise in the southeast. Hans E. Kinck said it this way from the top of the island: "It is here from Hardanger is most beautiful whether you turn your eyes inwards or outwards." Calcareous rocks have given the island a unique and exciting flora, here grow rare plants that are not common so far north. For example, we find gentians. Here you will find Northern Europe's oldest and largest lime tree. There is a marked hiking trail to the limekiln. Gjuvslandslia - landscape conservation area Is a 199-decare area that is beautifully located on the east side of the island between Gjuvsland and Åkre. The landscape conservation area extends from Hardangerfjorden and up to 197 meters in height. The protected area was established by royal resolution in 2000, based on the fact that we find one of the country's most important areas for the white elm tree here. It is estimated that between 1000 and 1500 trees of this species grow here, which has the status of vulnerable on the Norwegian Red List. Large parts of the area are cultivated land, and in 2008 it was selected as a cultural landscape for Hordaland. A widespread plant in the whole of Gjuvsland is the kublo flower, which is also the county flower in Hordaland. Here you can also find the national flower, the mountain lady. Here are old meadows with many beautiful and rare flowers and plants. The island has a great geological diversity. The bedrock contains large amounts of greenschist and it was in this shale layer that rich deposits of sulphur ore and copper ore were found. At the end of the 19th century, over 160,000 tons of sulphur pyrite were extracted - mostly by hand. There is a marked hiking trail to the abandoned sulfur mines at Valaheiane, this is an easy and exciting trip for the whole family. Here you will find a wall and remains of the old mining community. Ferjevågen bathing area This open area is located on the southeast side of the island, a long sandy beach surrounded by fine black rocks. This is perhaps one of the most beautiful and child-friendly swimming areas in the entire Hardangerfjorden. Varaldsøy Church In 1885, the white-painted wooden church was completed. It is beautifully situated in the middle of the village, and is the largest church in Kvinnherad. Varaldsøy has a very special fauna and a fantastic hiking terrain with marked hiking trails and challenges that can suit most people.
