Coimbra, a 20 minute drive away, is an ancient city with a famous university and is a great place to tour around and experience Portuguese life with cafés and restaurantes on every corner. Tomar, another historical city is a 30 minute drive south boasting the famous Convento de Cristo A 40 minute drive takes you to the coastline with endless sandy beaches and the nearby Roman ruins of Conimbriga are well worth a visit. A walk around the ramparts in nearby Penela castle has great views towards the Serra de Lousã and the Parque Biological Zoo in Miranda do Corvo will keep the children entertained for several hours. Wild river beaches, a short journey away offer an exciting alternative to the normal beach. On foot you can take off on numerous local paths to explore the nearby countryside.
