If a space is not free on arrival, there are usually plenty of parking options in the village within a stone’s throw of the property. Other things to note Number 2 Lady Modiford Hall is the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of Dartmoor. If you wish to, you can forget the car for a few days as there are so many wonderful walks and things to discover – starting right from our doorstep. However, if you wish to go a little further afield, a short drive of anywhere between 10 and 40 minutes will take you within easy reach of woodland, riverside and moorland walks (taking in many of the famous Dartmoor Tors and ancient relics), historical homes and sprawling estates, and spectacular coasts with beaches for all tastes. For local amenities, the lovely old market town of Tavistock is only 6.5 miles away (a 15-minute drive) and here you will find an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, restaurants and bars as well as the lively and fascinating Pannier market. Even closer is the smaller town of Yelverton, with a range of local shops (including The Larder, a highly recommended deli and a source of wonderful pasties and treats!) and a petrol station; this is only 2.5 miles away or a 7-minute drive. Buckland Monachorum is a quiet yet extremely friendly village with an intriguing history. It dates back to Saxon times from when it gained its rather grand-sounding name (which translates roughly to 'The Land of the White monks'). Behind the property is the historic St Andrew’s Church – which is lit up each night to reveal its full beauty. The church has its origins in about 900AD but the current structure dates back to 1490. It boasts two famous ancient fonts plus the tombs and family pews of Sir Francis Drake’s family. Next to the property is The Drake Manor Inn, originally dating back to the 12th century but given a rebuild in the 1700s. We strongly recommend a visit to soak in its unique atmosphere and to sample the local ales and excellent food; if you’re lucky, your visit to the bar might also coincide with a gathering of local folk musicians.
