Home in Emu Vale

Description

Welcome to the heritage-listed Emu Vale Schoolhouse (est. 1876), a beautifully preserved piece of local history nestled in the peaceful Southern Downs. Surrounded by open fields, cottage gardens, and country quiet, it’s a place where families, couples, slow travellers, and friends can truly unwind. Just 20 minutes from Warwick and an easy 2.5-hour drive from Brisbane or the Gold Coast, you’ll be perfectly placed to explore waterfalls, wineries, and scenic country trails. The space Once known as Frogs Hollow Country Retreat, this cherished 1876 school building has recently come under new ownership and been lovingly renamed The School House at Emu Vale, a gentle nod to its past and its enduring charm. Step inside and you’ll immediately feel the history of the old school days. Original hardwood floors, soaring ceilings, and generous windows breathe warmth and character into every corner. Sunlight pours into the former main schoolroom, now transformed into a welcoming open plan living and dining area that flows effortlessly to the outdoor patio. The cosy lounge invites you to settle in with comfortable seating and a wood-burning fireplace, perfect after exploring the Southern Downs. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need for relaxed cooking: a coffee machine, kettle, microwave, fridge, dishwasher, cookware, bakeware, and all the essentials for morning coffee or a shared dinner. There are two charming dining spaces to enjoy: one indoors and another on the fully enclosed verandah, where you can savour garden views in comfort all year round. The old blackboard still stands as a sweet reminder of the schoolhouse’s past, and in the old cupboards underneath, you’ll find some of your favourite games, books, and toys to keep little ones entertained. The School House features three peaceful bedrooms designed with comfort in mind. The master boasts a luxurious four-poster bed and ensuite, offering a restful retreat. The bunk room with three single beds is perfect for children or groups, while the third bedroom includes two cosy singles. Each room is equipped with portable fans and heaters for year-round comfort, blending the home’s heritage character with modern convenience. The bathrooms continue the theme of old meeting new, with the main bathroom featuring a classic clawfoot bath for a long, nostalgic soak. Perfectly positioned between Yangan and Killarney, and only 20 minutes from Warwick, The School House at Emu Vale offers a gentle blend of country calm and local adventure. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, tasting your way through local wineries, or wandering scenic trails, this historic retreat offers a memorable and heartfelt escape. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the age and nature of the way buildings were constructed in the late 1800's, our property is NOT airconditioned. Portable fans are provided in each bedroom for your comfort in summer and the cross breezes when windows are open cools the house appropriately. The surrounding fly screen enclosed verandahs also keep the house cool. In winter a log burner fireplace in the main living room and a small radiator heater in each bedroom keeps the home comfortably warm. Please do not book if airconditioning is essential for your stay. We are STRICTLY a non-smoking venue inside the house or anywhere on the grounds. FOOD AND DRINK: The Schoolhouse is about 20 minutes from the nearest major town, we recommend stopping in Warwick for groceries on your way. All major supermarkets are in the town centre. If you’re arriving from Boonah, the local IGA is a handy spot to pick up essentials. Don’t forget ingredients for a sunset pizza in our outdoor pizza oven, always a guest favourite! For smaller top-ups, the nearby towns of Yangan and Killarney have general stores and welcoming country pubs for an easy meal out. The kitchen is stocked with basic staples: cooking oil, salt and pepper, tea, coffee, sugar, paper towels, and classic tomato and BBQ sauce. We have ample parking for larger vehicles too Other things to note A Note About Rural Living The School House sits peacefully in the heart of rural Emu Vale, and with that comes the gentle soundtrack of farm life—cows calling, roosters greeting the morning, and the soft hum of nature all around. It’s part of the charm of staying somewhere with deep roots and open spaces. You may also notice the occasional insect, which is typical in a country setting. For your comfort, we provide Aeroguard and mosquito coils, and we recommend keeping the screen-enclosed verandahs shut to help keep the interior comfortable. Guests who enjoy the rhythm of country life usually find this setting wonderfully calming and authentic. If rural environments aren’t quite your style, this may not be the perfect fit. COUNTRY WATER: The School House runs on precious rainwater, so we kindly ask guests to be mindful of their usage and consider shorter showers where possible. For drinking water, we recommend boiling the tank water first, or you’re welcome to bring bottled water if you prefer. ABOUT PREVIOUS REVIEWS: In a few of our photos, you’ll notice guest reviews from Di and Ned, the former owners, back when the property was known as Frogs Hollow Country Retreat. We’ve kept these included simply to share the spirit of past guest experiences. As these reviews relate to the previous ownership, we’re unable to take responsibility for them, but we hope they offer a glimpse into the longstanding warmth of the place. We’re excited to create our own chapter of guest memories as custodians of this beautiful old schoolhouse. Over the coming months, we’ll be gently refreshing the property while honouring its 1800’s heritage, with updated photos to come. We’re also looking forward to celebrating its 150-year anniversary in February 2026 with an open day for past and present guests, family, and former students. In the meantime, if there’s anything we can do to make your stay special, please reach out, we’d love to help make your time at The School House truly unforgettable. Tracey & Pete.
