Historic windmill conversion in Thorndon, UK
Description
Feel relaxed and closer to the stars in this striking historic building. Built in 1797, the post mill was listed as one of the two highest mills in Suffolk until in 1923 when it was struck by lightning and the top had to be dismantled the following year. What remains is the large round house with its wonderful interior crinkle crankle walls, as well as a carefully crafted extension sympathetic to the mill building where you will find multiple rooms to rest your head as well as be entertained. The space The property is unusual with its Grade II listed round house and large extension, in the centre of the thriving village of Thorndon on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Lovingly restored to a high standard, the Old Post Mill retains its historical charm with its huge oak central post, trestles and quarter bars surrounded by a brick roundhouse which now houses a large open plan viewing room and beneath it, a well-equipped family sized kitchen. The property offers four bedrooms – one with a king sized bed, one with two single beds, one for a cot on request and one with a double sized bed. There are two ensuite bathrooms attached to two of the bedrooms, an additional family sized bathroom with large deep bath, also upstairs. Downstairs, as well as the kitchen and viewing room in the round house, there is an additional lounge, dining room/games room, utility room with washing machine, and downstairs WC. A glass link wraps itself around the round house, marrying the newer extension to the old roundhouse. The property has a good sized garden that wraps around the building to both sides and rear, all of which are fenced and secure. There is off road parking for two/three cars at the front of the property. There may be additional parking spaces available on request should you be expecting visitors during your stay. Please do talk to the owners about this, prior to your visit, to arrange for any additional, limited parking. Please note there is no smoking or vaping permitted anywhere in the property due to its timber construction and age. Please note no commercial photography is permissible inside or outside of the property at any time. One well behaved dog is welcome at an extra £20 fee. Guest access You have full and exclusive access to the house and its gardens, making it a private and peaceful home away from home. There is a strict maximum of 6 adults permitted to stay overnight in the property. Other things to note Accessibility: There are three steps with a handrail leading up to the front door. The viewing room is accessed from the kitchen by a spiral staircase with handrail.
