BEYNAC The small village of Beynac in Périgord is also one of the most beautiful villages in France. Hanging on a cliff 100 meters above the Lot, Saint-Cirq Lapopie is one of the major sites in the Lot valley. Chief town of one of the three viscounts of Quercy, Saint-Cirq Lapopie was divided in the Middle Ages between several feudal dynasties. As a result, several castles and fortresses made up the seigneurial fort and dominated the village. Below the fort, the village streets, closed by fortified doors, have preserved many old houses whose stone or half-timbered facades were built between the 13th and 16th centuries.
