Stonehaven Cottage

Wake up to the sound of birds in our charming, self-contained couples retreat located 50 minutes from Cradle Mountain and 6 minutes from the popular tourist town of Sheffield. With shops and restaurants only a short drive away, Stonehaven Cottage is the perfect place for a romantic weekend away or holiday adventure. You will be staying on our 23 acre farm with views to Mount Roland that is home to sheep, chickens and a variety of birds and wildlife. The space As you enter the front door, you access the living room with adjoining kitchenette and French doors opening up to the veranda. Upstairs you will find a large bedroom with a Queen size bed and a balcony. The adjacent bathroom is very spacious with a double vanity and rainwater shower. The kitchenette includes a toaster, kettle, mini fridge, microwave oven, portable one-zone induction hub and rice cooker to prepare breakfast and/or a simple meal. Olive oil, salt & pepper and some herbs and spices are provided. We provide some breakfast provisions including farm fresh eggs, homemade bread and granola, Ashgrove milk, butter & jam, porridge, as well as some snack items. Take down the picnic basket and blanket to the viewing platform and enjoy stunning views of Mount Roland and neighbouring farming properties. The platform can be accessed from the cottage down a (rather steep) gravel road, so make sure you bring appropriate shoes. There are two chairs and a side table on the viewing platform. It is also the perfect spot for some gentle stretching or a morning meditation. You will find 2 yoga mats inside the coffee table. Enjoy a glass of wine in front of the slow combustion fire or cook up a summer BBQ on the back veranda. Feel free to wander around the shared garden, which you can find on the left as you walk out the driveway. Please note that due to an open staircase, steps and the lack of a child guard around the fireplace, the cottage is not recommended for infants, young children and/or people with mobility issues for safety reasons. Guest access Our farm is accessed via a quiet country lane that is in good condition and suitable for any type of vehicle. The cottage offers a private entrance accessed from the car park, so you do not need to carry your luggage very far. There is an automated light at the front door, helping you find the key safe. Once inside, the cottage is completely private, with views to the garden and back veranda that overlooks Mount Roland. The cottage is located in close proximity to the main house, connected by two open carports. We have carefully considered your privacy and have installed privacy blinds and a fence that blocks views to our home. There is a bell on the righthand side of the fence that you can use when you require our assistance. Other things to note As we are located in a rural area and next to bushland, we are visited at night by possums, wallabies and bandicoots. It is common to hear possums running across the roof at night. Shops and services There are a number of coffee shops and cafés in town, including Bossimi’s famous bakehouse on the corner of Main and High streets, Mountain Mumma (60 Main Street) and the Epicurean Café (68 Main Street). All the cafés are excellent and offer a range of dine-in and/or take away foods. Please be aware that particularly in the winter months, many Tasmanian businesses do not open until 10am and may have early closing times. There is an IGA supermarket that is open 7 days a week and closes at 7pm if you need any groceries. There is also the Sheffield Fruit & Veg shop just off the main street, on Pioneer Crescent, which closes at 5pm on weekdays and 1pm on Saturday. They sell great produce and on Wednesdays stock ‘Uprise Sourdough & Pastries’ fresh bread that is very nice. Make sure you get there early. There is also a Hill Street Grocer in Devonport (30min drive) or Latrobe (25min drive) that offer a gorgeous array of gourmet groceries to enjoy during your stay. We also have a hardware, post office, pharmacy, ATM and a number of boutique style shops in Sheffield. Evening meals can be obtained from the Sheffield Hotel, T’s Chinese Restaurant, and the RSL (meals Thursday to Sunday lunch). Bookings are usually required, and you might need to check the kitchen closing times. Service stations There are two service stations in Sheffield. The Ampol on the corner of Main and High Streets and the United at the western end of the approach on Sheffield Road as you come into town from Devonport. Please check opening times. Information centre and other services There is an information centre at Mural Park on Pioneer Crescent. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is also a lovely gallery/gift shop from local artists that is worth a visit. It is located on the other side of the car park near the Information Centre.
