Description

Welcome to the Maine woods! You'll enjoy unplugging in your own cabin on a pond that is private and loaded with wildlife and opportunities to enjoy nature at its finest. Kayak with the loons, bring your fishing pole and relax the afternoon away till you enjoy a pondside bonfire every sunset or star gazing from the pond float. Peace. “Ah dear nature—the mere remembrance, after a short forgetfulness, of the pine woods! I come to it as a hungry man to a crust of bread.” —HD Thoreau The space “Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill.” —John Muir This Dream Cabin in the Woods is THE place to be if you truly wish to escape the stresses of “civilization" and the craziness of the world. This is NOT a typical rental home. It is an off-grid cabin in the woods with gas appliances and relies on a “passive cooling" design instead of modern air conditioning in the middle of the Maine forest. This is a 30’x24’ Post and Beam cabin in the middle of the woods in your "own private Idaho." Wildlife abounds in this secluded paradise. Come get away from it all! There is no wifi, only Spotty cell phone reception so you won't be interrupted from reading, cooking, hiking, stargazing, sunsets, and enjoying the surrounding woods. This beloved post and beam cabin is custom built by myself and my wife on our honeymoon with pine, cedar and spruce from our lands in an open concept style for comfort, convenience, beauty and relaxation. The wall of sliding doors and windows brings the outside in. The open loft circulates the aromas of the hemlock, pine and birch forest and the coffee made in the morning. The upstairs of the cabin consists of 1 extra large 16’x30’ loft has 1 queen bed, 1 king, 1 full futon, and 3 singles. The bathroom has a shower, sink and composting toilet is on its own with door. The downstairs has a living room, dining area, bathroom and kitchen. The living room has a Jøtul woodstove as a center piece and leather sofas surrounding it. The dining room is a large round wooden table with 5 large chairs around it. The kitchen area has an island surrounded by bar stools that has a sink, garbage area and all the cleaning supplies you can use. The fully equipped kitchen includes center island, gas light chandeliers, danish iron chandelier, bar stools, sink, garbage drawer, water cooler and all the cleaning supplies you can use. We provide all dinnerware, flatware, stemware, cooking utensils, pots and pans, lobster utensils, and serving dishes. There are a few condiments kept in the fridge and the kitchen is stocked with oils, vinegars, spices, and Most basics things needed to make a good old fashioned camp meal. Propane gas operates the following appliances: stove, fridge, lights, water heater, and wall heater. In addition, there are outdoor solar lights, indoor solar lights, wood stove, composting toilet and outhouse (that's the 1/2 bath), and pond fed shower. There is running water for sinks and shower via pond and generator. Drinking water is carry-in and provided (20 gallons/more if needed). The cabin is 100 feet from the rocky shore with a path from front doors to the water. There are uninterrupted views to the north up the pond. We are on the southeast side of the water so we get beautiful sunsets. Kayaks, life jackets, canoes, noodles, floaters are available for your use. Some fishing poles with bobbers, string and plastic bait. Mostly warm water fish, although a guest caught a trout in a far cove. There is a deep water lake 2 miles up the road if you like to fish land lock salmon, brook trout or bass. You’re welcome to bring kayak or canoe to fish there. 1.1 miles on rough road (4WD/AWD needed with 6.5 ground clearance). The road is in good shape for Maine logging road, but there are a series of locked gates so no one will bother you. "A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is Earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature." - HD Thoreau The remote location of the pond and cabin may not be for everyone, but true outdoor and nature lovers, that aren't deterred by a rough road and lack of modern trappings, will be richly rewarded. If you are coming to socialize with neighbors at the pond, you will be bitterly disappointed. This is a place to deep dive into nature and your rhythms of relaxing. Bonuses for the rugged adventurers include unparalleled seclusion, amazing sunsets, diverse wildlife and plant life, stunning night skies, rugged hiking, impressive and varied geologic features, a large pond that invites kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, swimming and bird watching. There are coves to explore with lotus lily pads and nesting loons. Guests will also enjoy access to miles upon miles of rarely traveled roads for driving, biking, or walking. When you're done exploring and enjoying the natural wonders of the property and surrounding area, you can relax on the shore with its stone fire pit, float out in the canoe to stargaze or retreat into the comfort of the cabin with a open fire in wood stove. Mainers usually enjoy a glass of coffee brandy and a rousing recall of the days adventures at this point. We are pet friendly. However, we do not accept all pets. Send a request to bring your friendly, well-trained, well-behaved pet. Please include breed/name/history/good pet report to get approved. We do not discriminate against large dogs. We have large dogs. They work with me and are often with me at checkin and checkout. Your dog will be expected to meet me and interact appropriately. If your dog cannot do that, it is not welcome. Do not bother to inquire. We do discriminate against mean, biting, untrained and misbehaving ones. As a special offer to guests, we offer a sampling of our seasonal garden/orchard through a garden basket with fresh eggs, jam, and herbs. It will be enough for a month and maybe leftovers. Garden baskets are $25 August to October. $15 June. $5 for a dozen fresh eggs. Please tell me if you’re interested before checkin. “I almost wish we were butterflies and liv’d but three summer days — three such days with you I could fill with more delight than fifty common years could ever contain.” —John Keats Guest access Canoes, kayaks, life jackets, full kitchen, charcoal grill, miles of logging road hiking, swings by the lake, hammock in the trees, lakeside fire pit, picnic table. There is a 100 watt solar array that provides light, 12v DC inputs for small electronics, and charging stations for USB cables. There is no wifi and most people use their cellphones. Acadia National Park is a 34 miles Belfast is 27 miles. Bangor is 15 miles. Other things to note 4 wheel drive/AWD required. 6.5 to 7 inches of clearance on vehicles is ideal. Generator supplies power to pump water from pond for showers and sinks. Composting toilet inside, outhouse outside. $50 pet fee per visit Pet fee is per pet 1 pet $50 2 pets $100 3 pets $150 Etc. $100 for un-approved/un-announced/hidden pets per day. We have pets, we know the signs when they have been in the cabin. $40 per day/person over 2 guests $100 per day/person for un-approved/un-announced guests not in the reservation Late checkin Checkin is between 3:00-7:00. After 11:00 pm, there is no checkin until the following day. Again, we are not a hotel. We are a private residence and have lives. If you cannot abide by this fact, please do not book. This cabin is a 31 day minimum rental because of the scale of work to prepare it for your arrival, checkin, checkout in the middle of the woods. Maine Bottles and cans If you’d like to leave your bottles and cans that you’ve separated from the garbage, we donate them to the local boy and Girl Scout Troops. If you want to redeem them, take them and stop at a redemption center or grocery store.
