The space Step into a real-life fairytale adventure staying at Braylsham Castle, situated between Mayfield and Heathfield in East Sussex. The castle is situated on an moated island complete with drawbridge, on a lake set in amongst the rolling Sussex countryside, complete with stone turrets, spiral staircases and stain glass windows, yet actually only completed in 1990 so with the luxury of central heating, good WiFi and all mod cons. It is perfect for walking and exploring the local High Wield countryside in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This is a Unique opportunity to rent a whole castle for yourselves. We are happy for you to invite additional guests for the evening (but not to stay the night) and chance to enjoy dinning in the great hall together - we have seated up to 24 people there before! However, please note this is NOT LUXURY accommodation. Many of the fixtures and furniture are all quite old, the furniture has some wear, and the garden furniture is pretty basic. The house was built for a family of 5/6 so the Aga can struggle to keep up with hot showers for 15 and retain enough temperature to cook your meal! But the beds are nice and comfy, the heating works well, the WiFi is good, and it is a clean, cozy, fun, unique place to stay and make memories with friends and family. Braylsham Castle was the dream of was orthodontist John Mew, the founder of Mewing. He build it by hand, digging the lake, creating the island, laying the stone, moulding the stone spiral staircase, hand carving the beams in the great hall and restoring the stain glass windows, finally completing it in 1990’s. It is made up of a medieval manor style house combined with a large great banqueting hall, large rectangular stone tower and smaller round towers. From the castle you can visit the nearby historic village of Mayfield, visit Winnie-the-Poo’s old stomping ground at Ashdown Forest, Kipling’s home of Batemans, numerous National Trust options, Bewl Water reservoir or just immerse yourself in the rolling Sussex hills. 30 mins to Pevensey Bay, 45 mins to Rye and Camber Sands and The Spa town of Tunbridge Wells is a 20 mins drive. Please note - that whilst the ground floor has an accessible bedroom, bathroom, wet room shower and accessible bath, the rest of the property is not suitable for anyone with mobility issues due to it being situated over different floors, some split levels with numerous steps, spiral stone staircases etc. Please note - that bedroom 8 shown with the day bed, with pull out trundle bed underneath, does lift up to a full size double bed. However this bedroom is beside the kitchen with only a curtain for privacy - so perfect for the teenagers but maybe not a couple wanting more privacy. Sorry no dogs allowed! Guest access Private parking. Whole property, woodlands, paddock, grounds and lake for your private use.
