Hitra is a very popular place for fishing tourists and Helgebostad is located close to many good fishing spots in the beautiful archipelago. Hitra is Central Norway's largest island and consists of 2,500 islands, islets and reefs. One of these is Helgebostad, which is located on the north/west side of the island. The name Helgebostad comes from the old meaning of "holy abode", possibly it was the Vikings who gave the island the name. There are traces of the Vikings in the form of burial mounds on the island. About half of the island is located with the archipelago and the sea as the nearest neighbor. Around the other half of the island stretches a fjord. The island has varied and beautiful nature with many hiking opportunities both on Helgebostad and Hitra. Northern Europe's densest deer herd with about 6,000 animals can be found on Hitra. Rich bird life, wetland birds, seabirds and eagles. The sea has different types of fish. Cod, haddock, pollock, mackerel, herring, ling and whiting to mention a few. If you are lucky you can see whales, orcas and porpoises (a dolphin species). In the archipelago outside Helgebostad there are very good diving conditions with a rich diversity of species. For all activities that take place on or by the sea, weather conditions apply. Other things to note Pets are allowed by appointment. This entails an extra fee of NOK 300 to be paid on arrival. Bed linen and towels must be brought by the tenant.
