Koper was once part of the Venetian Empire and this has left its mark on the town. The narrow streets of the historical centre offer some excellent restaurants and cafés. Visitors can also take advantage of the regular ferry services from Koper to Venice (3 hours) and arrive in the city by sea, a breathtaking experience. There are many wonderful beaches along the coast, including Zusterna Beach (8 minutes) and the beach at Punta Grossa nature reserve (17 minutes). Further along the coast is the charming harbour town of Izola (12 minutes). One of the oldest settlements on the coast it is packed with history and has a lively marina. Visitors can hire kayaks and paddle boards to explore this stunning coastline. Away from the coast, the area is famous for its rock formations, caves and subterranean rivers.
