The first inhabitants of the district were the farmers of the nearby Campidano who had commercial relations with the city. Villanova was born when these farmers decided to settle closer to Cagliari, in order to have it facilitated in their activity. Until the first decades of the 20th century, the agricultural origins of the district were also revealed by the numerous vegetable gardens and vineyards that surrounded it. Between 1616 and 1680, Giovanni Angelo Puxeddu, a Sardinian painter and sculptor of the 17th century, lived there.
