Other things to note The apartment is located in the historic Villanova district, one of the four historic districts of Cagliari, founded in the 13th century at the foot of the eastern slope of the hill on which Castello stands. The first inhabitants of the district were the farmers of the nearby Campidano who had commercial relations with the city. Villanova was born when these farmers decided to settle closer to Cagliari, in order to have it facilitated in their activity. Until the first decades of the 20th century, the agricultural origins of the district were also revealed by the numerous vegetable gardens and vineyards that surrounded it. Between 1616 and 1680, Giovanni Angelo Puxeddu, a Sardinian painter and sculptor of the 17th century, lived there. Via di Villanova The neighborhood today presents itself with its old part, located between Via Garibaldi and the embankment of Viale Regina Elena, characterized by simple homes, which develop on one or two floors, several churches and numerous shops, and the more recent part, crossed by the central and busy Via Sonnino, with the buildings, built starting from the 1930s, which have gradually occupied the countryside, in which some important monuments stood isolated, such as the Basilica of San Saturnino and the surrounding necropolis, today surrounded by the chaotic comings and goings of the modern city. Villanova is home to two important archconfraternities, particularly involved in the rites of the Holy Week in Cagliari. Registration details IT092009C2000S0575
