Immediately after arrival, you will be captivated by the picturesque image of the village. You will feel like in the Middle Ages. Stone copper houses on a steep slope, a view of the majestic Roman Catholic Gothic Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord from the 13th century and its famous wooden covered staircase with 162 wooden steps leading to it. By visiting the village of the folk architecture monument reserve, in the center of which stands our and for a while your apartment, you will find yourself in a unique place, which is a return to the period of the flourishing of Špania Dolina as a world center of copper ore mining in the 16th century. Copper was exported from Špania Dolina to the entire then-known world, thus forever entering history. And although the hustle and bustle in the mining shafts has probably subsided forever, the famous past of this beautiful location breathes on visitors from behind every corner. Get to know the attractions of the village in the form of a mining educational trail, which starts from the Spanish Square between the Imperial Chamber and the Klopačka guesthouse, in which there is a small museum of lace. The Imperial Tunnel is a monument to the visit of the emperors of the Roman Empire Joseph and Leopold, the sons of Empress Maria Theresa and their sister Maria Antoinette. Halda Maximilián is a remnant of mining activity and one of the largest man-made hills in Europe. From the top of the heap there is a magnificent view of the surroundings. The Copper Museum is located in the municipal office building. You will learn how and where copper from Špania Dolina traveled from the Bronze Age to the end of the 19th century. The Špania Dolina mining water supply is a unique technical monument from the 16th century, which was used to supply water for the operation of mining equipment. The water supply was up to 36 km long and belonged to European unique. Mining tunnels and shafts During the route, you can see the remains of medieval mining tunnels and shafts, which show how miners mined copper and silver in difficult conditions. The mining underground tunnel is 1600 meters long and straight as a pencil. At the entrance somewhere at the end of the tunnel in the deep darkness you can see a tiny light the size of a pinhead. On the other side, the tunnel opens into the former mining settlement of Piesky. The local Germans called it Sandberg – Sand Hill. Over time, the local inhabitants changed the name to Zamperk. You must arrange an underground visit with local guides. 10 information boards on the history of mining give us a comprehensive picture of mining activities and the life of miners. Nature and views In addition to historical monuments, the trail offers beautiful views of Špania Dolina and the surrounding mountains. The route passes through forests and meadows, making the walk pleasant and relaxing. In the center of the village square stands the historic building Lavondória, which was built around 1560. Currently, there are four period operations in the Lavondória building: the Jedivo a potrebné shop, the Historical School and the Mining Pub. The Imperial Chamber you will visit is a restored Baroque space and was established in honor of the rare visit of the sons of Maria Theresa in 1764, which is also mentioned in the notebook of her younger son Leopold. We divided the unique space of the chamber into these thematic units. Historical accommodation in Baroque style with a canopy. In case you want to cook, in the middle part there is a kitchen and dining area also in Baroque style with copper elements from decoration to dishes. On one of the walls are exhibited paintings of high-quality reproductions of Renaissance painters Sandro Botticelli and Albrecht Dürer, etc., because they are also part of the unique history of Špania Dolina using a green pigment that was produced in the village.
