Lillian's Retreat
Lillian's Retreat
Description
Lillians Retreat was built at the height of the goldrush. Over the years it has succumbed to the ravages of time, however the restoration of this grand home has now commenced a room at a time. Its a one-of-a-kind house and a short stroll to the centre of town, the heritage listed Civic Club, and Lissner Park. You are welcome to enjoy this once beautiful home, and see how the work is being undertaken to restore it to its former glory. At this time there is only stair access to this house. The space Lillian's Retreat was built in 1891 for Mr W.D. Casey a former Mayor of Charters Towers, a sawmiller and board member of one of the top gold producing mines on the field. Your room is special. as it was once two smaller rooms of the house. These may have been for children or household support and your ensuite has been completely renovated. The ensuite occupies the original bathroom space that has been in place since the house was built. This was very rare in house design at the time. Guest access Feel free to wander through the house and enjoy the original features, from the 12 inch skirting boards to the hand cut Australian cedar ceiling roses. Have a game of pool or snooker and if you play, you are welcome to play the baby grand piano or if old time music is more your thing I'm happy to fire up the gramophone and you can be immersed in the memories of a bygone era. Guests may also use the kitchen if they would like to prepare a meal and there are ample choices for other options including take away or pub meals a short stroll from the house. The house is being restored so some areas are not accessible however you are welcome to have a full accompanied tour or the house if you wish. During your stay This is my home so I will generally be somewhere around. If there is something you need or have any questions, want a tour of the house or feel like some company just let me know. Other things to note This house is within easy walking distance to the main street, other attractions and most of the pubs where meals are available.
