Following are just a few ideas to help make your stay a pleasurable one. THE AUSTRALIAN WAR MEMORIAL (AWM) The Australian War Memorial is a very short walk from the apartment (less than 200 metres along Anzac Parade, towards Mount Ainslie). The AWM website provides more information about opening times, current displays and tours, including Poppy’s Café, which is open from 9am to 3pm each day . Being so close to the AWM provides a great opportunity to experience the Last Post Ceremony which commences each afternoon at 4.30pm. The ceremony begins with the Australian National Anthem followed by the piper's lament. An individual's story is told, and the Ode is recited by Australian Defence Force personnel. The ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post. The Last Post Ceremony is an increasingly popular public event, so arrive early. Places cannot be reserved. LAKE BURLEY GRIFFIN: Lake Burley Griffin is located at the base of Anzac Parade, approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the apartment. The best access point is via Wendouree Drive, off Constitution Avenue. Wendouree Drive passes under Parkes Way and brings you directly to the wide pathways along the lake’s central basin. Blundell’s Cottage is also located on Wendouree Drive. Lake Burley Griffin (the Lake) is Canberra's centrepiece, and a significant number of national institutions, parks and national public places are located on or near its shores. The Lake and surrounding areas are popular for a wide range of boating and other recreational activities. There are lovely parks for picnics and areas for swimming as well as walking/running tracks and cycling paths. The Lake is a busy waterway with rowing, sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, dragon boating, fishing, model boating and stand-up paddle boarding being just some of the activities available. Around the Lake, there are many services available including kayak and stand up paddleboard hire, lake cruises and ferry services. There are also parks, cafés and restaurants around the Lake where you can relax and take in the view. ANZAC PARADE MEMORIALS: The apartment complex fronts onto Anzac Parade. Anzac Parade is set along Canberra’s magnificent Land Axis, a key feature of the Griffins’ original 1912 plan of the city. The Land Axis is now bookended by Parliament House at one end and the Australian War Memorial at the other. The National Capital Authority (NCA) has a pamphlet for a self-guided tour of the memorials. MOUNT AINSLIE – walk/ride/drive: Mount Ainslie is located behind the War Memorial. There is a viewing platform at the top that provides a vista straight down Anzac Parade, across the lake. It’s a short drive to the top from the apartment (10 minutes), with the roadway accessed from Fairbairn Avenue. Alternatively, if you are feeling energetic, there is a pathway that winds up the front of Mount Ainslie, bringing you directly to the lookout. It is a strenuous walk/run, however there are many convenient rest stops along the way. If you have your cyclist, the asphalt road that winds to the top of Mount Ainslie is a popular ride. Mountain bikers and trail runners will find lots of interesting and challenging trails around Mount Ainslie and in the nature reserves that surround it. DUNTROON & ADFA: The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) is a tri-service military academy that provides military and academic education for junior officers of the Australian Defence Force. ADFA is located in the suburb of Campbell, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, near the Australian Government district of Russell. It is situated next to Mount Pleasant, which gives some parts of ADFA a view over the rest of Canberra. ADFA is adjacent to the Australian Army military academy, the Royal Military College, Duntroon. Duntroon is the Australian Army’s officer training establishment. It was founded at Duntroon in 1911 on the Campbell family homestead, which was acquired by the Australian Government in 1912. BLUNDELL'S COTTAGE: Blundell’s Cottage, built in the 1860s, is one of the few remaining stone worker’s dwellings as part of the Duntroon estate. Blundells Cottage is open to the public and is a short walk from the apartment, towards the lake. Many buildings built by Robert Campbell and his family are still standing around Canberra, including Blundell's Cottage, St John the Baptist Church, Reid, Duntroon House (now part of RMC Duntroon) and Yarralumla House (now Government House). ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, REID: St John the Baptist Church is on the corner of Anzac Parade and Constitution Avenue, a short 5 minutes’ walk from the apartment. The church was designed by Robert Campbell between 1841 and 1844. The church was consecrated in 1845 and celebrated its 175th anniversary in 2020. The Church, graveyard and schoolhouse are living reminders of Canberra's pioneering farming community. It is the oldest surviving public building in Canberra’s inner city and the oldest church in the ACT. Many pioneers of the Canberra district are interred at St John's. The churchyard was closed to new burials in 1937 unless exclusive rights to a plot were held. It contains several medieval stones, including a 12th century stone from Canterbury Cathedral and a 13th century stone from Westminster Abbey. EATING & RELAXING: 1. Campbell5 on Constitution Avenue: Walk along Anzac Parade, towards the lake to reach Constitution Avenue, which intersects Anzac Parade and runs from the city to the Defence office precinct. Also located here is the ‘Pedlar Bar’ (next to Teddy Picker’s), and the ‘Intra Prvn café’, as well as the ‘Paranormal Wine Bar’. Campbell5 also has several wellness and fitness establishments including Alchemy Beauty Lab, The Skin Health Clinic, and Cali Hair Studio and Jones + Me for hair. Fitness studios in this area include Hiit Republic (open 24/7), Club Lime and Praksis Movement Studio. These are all within 15 minutes of the apartment. 2. Campbell shops: The local shops are a short 10 minutes’ walk away. Turn right along Blamey Crescent, as you exit the front door. The shops are on the left side. Venues include: - Hello Café - Les Bistronomes - The Department of Pizza - Thai Retreat – Massage and day spa - Campbell IGA –a well-stocked supermarket, including a range of beer/wines. There is a small café at the front of the supermarket that serves great coffee and excellent sandwiches and small meals to take-away. 3. Canberra City centre & Lonsdale Street in Braddon: The Canberra City centre and Braddon’s Lonsdale Street restaurant precinct are a pleasant 20 to 30 min walk through two of Canberra’s oldest suburbs, Reid and Braddon. The wide streets and verges are lined with deciduous trees & evergreen trees, plantings guided by Thomas Weston, officer-in-charge of afforestation, Canberra. Construction of these suburbs commenced in 1926 when there was an urgent need to transfer government officials to Canberra as the provisional Parliament House – now known as Old Parliament House – was scheduled to open in 1927. These suburbs have retained much of their original homes and cottage charm. Areas closer to the city area have been revamped and rediscovered in recent years. In fact, it wasn’t so long ago that Braddon was a car strip, filled with mechanics, used and new car yards and car washes. Since the construction of a raft of new and trendy apartment buildings, Braddon (and particularly, Lonsdale Street) has been transformed into one of Canberra most vibrant and popular food and coffee hubs. It is now known for good coffee, fine food and boutique shopping. There are just too many excellent food options and restaurants in the city and Braddon areas to list here. The best way to peruse the many options is using the Visit Canberra food and drink online guide, which includes an interactive map, showing all cafés and restaurants.
