After a fundamental renovation and restoration phase of the building, a total of 6 apartments were created here. The building is a Görlitz architectural monument. During extensive restoration work on the building, Fischmarktstraße 5, in 2016, as part of the renovation in the basement, brick, dungeon-like rooms were encountered, provided with heavy iron doors, just for only 1 person. Remains of a barred window hatch let little light into the room. A centrally anchored iron ring caught the eye on the vaulted ceiling. The previous assumption became the certainty that one had actually come across the remains of the oldest prison, which was located directly on the old city wall, called "Büttelei" or "Stockhaus". The prison was thus located directly on the former defensive ring still within the city. The location can be traced without a doubt on the basis of existing city maps. In 1525, a major fire destroyed the houses, mostly covered with wooden shingles, up to the neighboring Brüderstraße. In 1589, the old house was rebuilt and extended on its foundations. However, the former building was already mentioned in 1492 as "Brauhof 3 Eichen", surrounded by a large orchard. For its maintenance, 6 wagons with "Malefiz persons" (prisoners), which were actually intended for galleys, were used in 1572. An extremely eventful history can be inferred from the fact that, according to the information, a total of 22 people lived in this house in 1535, who came from the wealthy middle class. After complete destruction by another fire in 1817, the house was rebuilt. From this time also comes the inscription above the Baroque portal of sandstone with the alliance coat of arms, burned down on the 30th. July 1817, built in 1818. After being taken over by the city as owner in 1822, the offices of the "Royal Prussian Inquisitorate" were set up there. Temporarily, the living quarters of the executioner are said to have been located there. Other things to note Children under 2 years old are charged a small extra fee of 6.00 EUR/night.
