Rook’s Nest, Shouldham

An idyllic little nest in the peaceful village of Shouldham, recorded in the Domesday Book. A friendly pub is a five-minute walk away and Shouldham Warren's forest trails start at the village edge. Winter birders are spoilt: Snettisham's wader spectacle, Welney's wild swans, RSPB Titchwell, Lakenheath Fen, and Springwatch favourites Wild Ken Hill and Pensthorpe are all within easy reach. Sandringham and Hunstanton, gateway to the North Norfolk Coast, are close by too. The space Welcome to Rook's Nest, a snug little apartment in the heart of Shouldham, a quiet west Norfolk village with a community-owned pub five minutes' walk away and forest trails on the doorstep. Inside, the kitchenette is small and has no cooker, but the microwave and air fryer cope with more than you'd think. We leave a welcome pack wherever we can, so breakfast on day one is sorted. There's a coffee machine, tea and hot chocolate, plus a fridge for the essentials: lager and wine. The bedroom is generous, the bed is comfortable and the wood burner does the rest. Bedlinen and a bedspread are provided, though the house is warm enough that you probably won't need the extra layer. The snug looks out over a very private courtyard and is made for a glass of wine and a film. There's free WiFi and a 50" TV with Netflix, Prime, Disney+, Paramount+, Apple TV and YouTube. The bathroom has a proper waterfall shower and plenty of hot water. Towels are provided, including jumbo ones for anyone who likes to be properly wrapped up. There's off-road parking for cars, secure off-road parking for motorbikes and bicycles, and an EV charger on request at extra cost. Birders, you're in the right place. Snettisham's wader spectacle, Welney's wild swans, RSPB Titchwell, Lakenheath Fen, and Springwatch favourites Wild Ken Hill and Pensthorpe are all within easy reach. For stately homes, there's Sandringham, the King's Norfolk retreat, as well as Houghton Hall and Oxburgh Hall, a magnificent moated manor house. Walkers can start in Shouldham Warren at the edge of the village, try Lynford Arboretum and Lakes near Mundford, or follow the path from Shouldham down to the River Nar by Pentney Abbey. On the North Norfolk Coast, Beans Boats run pre-booked trips from Morston Quay to see one of the UK's largest grey seal colonies. And if your idea of relaxing involves more horsepower, Snetterton race circuit isn't far. For food, try the village pub, or head to Downham Market for its cafés and restaurants, including a cheese deli that's worth the trip on its own. We are close to a lot of truly beautiful places, and again, we are only a short drive away from Sandringham if you are of a mind to see the King and Queen or go to one of the many events they hold on the Sandringham Estate.
