The area around Ångermanälven offers fantastic nature both winter and summer. What is there to do in beautiful Åsele? information taken from the municipality's website. Åsele is located in the forest landscape between mountains and coast. Many people know Åsele for the annual summer market, but there is also much more to experience here! Nature & Nature Experiences The landscape in Åsele municipality is varied with alternating mountains, ponds, lakes, streams, forests and marshes. The river Ångermanälven flows right through the municipality. Mostly, a lot of conifers grow in the area such as pine and spruce, but also birch and some other deciduous trees. It is unusual to find fruit trees here in southern Lapland, but berry bushes thrive and there are plenty of wild berries such as blueberries, lingonberries, and cloudberries in late summer and autumn. For those who like to be out in the woods and countryside, there are fantastic hiking trails, both shorter, for example, for families with children and longer for those who want a bigger challenge. For example, you can hike in our national park, Björnlandet We have 57 nature reserves in Åsele municipality. Stenbithöjden is the most famous and is located at the municipal border between Åsele and Dorotea. There, the visitor gets an original wilderness feeling, with forests close to the mountains and about twenty small lakes, ponds and streams. The area has a low mountain character and boasts Åsele's highest mountain, 668 meters above sea level. Other wonderful nature experiences can be had by visiting Stockholmsgata, which is also a nature reserve and where there is a canyon formation which was formed by a mighty ice river that dug out the porous bedrock about 9,400 years ago. The canyon formation is 50 meters deep and 1.5 kilometers long! Bergvattenberget is a lookout point on a cliff with a 120-meter vertical drop. A fence is set up on the site for the safety of visitors. The sacrificial altar is said to be a sacred place for the Sami who once lived in the area. Bergvattenberget is equipped with wind protection, fireplace, benches, tables to sit at and enjoy your own coffee while having a magnificent view. Some examples of wild animals that live around Åsele municipality: black grouse, fox, deer, bear, moose, beaver and lynx. The good fishing attracts many people to visit Åsele municipality and forms the base plate in our hospitality industry. We have 20 different fisheries conservation areas. In our municipality, there are many lakes, ponds, streams and rivers that are ideal for fishing. The fishing waters are managed by 20 different fisheries management areas, some of which also provide boats. There are several nice sandy beaches in the municipality. The swimming area that the municipality manages is called Stamsjön, which is located 3.8 kilometers from Åsele city center. It is shallow, child-friendly, there are changing rooms, life buoys, swings, beach volleyball court and has several prepared fire pits as well as life buoys. You can learn about Åsele's cultural history by visiting the local history area in the center, which has exhibitions that show what life was like in the past and how the area has grown. There is also a unique textile and clothing collection with clothes from the late 1800s onwards. Also nice hand-woven plaids and lots of crocheted/knitted bridal crowns. Events Our biggest event is Åsele Market, always on the 3rd weekend of July, which attracts lots of visitors from all over Sweden during the market's 4 days.
