Located in a quiet neibourhood, Little Penthouse provides its tenants with an absolute isolation, while offering the opportunity, after a few minutes walk, to be surrounded by nature, and explore some unique spots of interest nearby. The space Things to see and do: Neapoli Taste the traditional greek coffee along with local sweets, relaxing yourself at the coffee bars of the square, after a little town tour. Meeting locals is very easy. If you like to take some information about the area, don't hesitate to ask. Everybody will be happy to help you and suggest interesting places to see. Visit the archaeological collection, at a historic school building that was established in 1870 and in its time it was the first secondary school in the area. At the same building, you can also find the folk art museum, which will give you a taste of the town's everyday's life, starting from the 19th century and so. A very significant place of interest is the franciscan monastery of ‘Fraro’, the remains of which are standing there from the 14th century. Petros Filargos, later Pope Alexander the 5th, was born and grew here as a monk. There are also many other churches and monasteries, very close to Neapoli, that have great historical and architectural significance. Explore the wild and quiet beaches nearby and, if you are lucky, you might swim together with a turtle. Walking, hiking and cycling is an easy and relaxing option. Neapoli is surrounded by olive groves, oaks, almond trees (try the local almond made drink 'soumada'), pines, prickly pears and figs, with sweet, delicious fruits, and a variety of wild flowers and herbs that only grow in Crete. Bird watching is also interesting, as in Crete you can find many species that live here permanently or just pass by. Eagles and vultures usually fly above the numerous gorges of the island, and it s very easy for the traveller to watch them. Visit some interesting spots in the area, such as an art studio or a traditional instrument workshop, take a tour of an olive factory, feed small animals at the zoo park, watch a performance in an open air theater. Ask about music and dance festivals taking place at the time of your staying. It is a great experience to dance among locals if you are up to. And if you have the time and a rented car, there are countless interesting places around, such as mountains, gorges, springs, old windmills and, of course, more isolated and unspoiled beaches, waiting for you to explore. Agios Nikolaos (10 min) Voulismeni, a lake by the sea, is the town's highlight and a place of unique beauty. A myth about ‘no bottom of the lake ever found’, high, vertical rocks and small fishing boats, combine an ideal picture for the visitor. In Agios Nikolaos you can find many beautiful beaches, most of them awarded by the ‘blue flag’. You can visit the archaeological and the folklore museum, the municipal gallery, and many shops with local products and souvenirs. Also a perfect choice for an evening dinner or drink, if you are up to some nightlife! Elounda (20 min) A former fishing village which eventually changed into a famous destination, well known for it's 5 star hotels and it's world famous v.i.p.'s visitors. It s situated beside the sank remains of the ancient town Olous, still visible under the water. Other interesting spots are the sandy beach of Kolokytha and the old villages Kato Elounda, Pano Elounda and Pines. Plaka-Spinalonga Five minutes from Elounda lies the small fishing village of Plaka, where you can taste fresh fish and other local dishes. It has a daily boat connection to the island of Spinalonga (you can also take a boat from Elounda and Agios Nikolaos), a significant venetian fortress which, at the beginning of the 20th century, was used as a colony for lepers, and stayed in use until 1957. Spinalonga is a candidate for the Unesco World Heritage List. Kritsa One of the oldest villages of Crete, that still keeps its traditional architecture. Only 10 min far from Agios Nikolaos, Kritsa hosts numerous visitors every year. Take a walk around, do some shopping (try some hand made fabrics) and don't forget to search for the delicious cheese pie ‘nerati myzithropita’, the local specialty. Must visit the archaeological sight ‘Lato’, the byzantine church ‘panagia Kera’, and the Museum of Rare and Endemic Plants ‘Rodanthi’. Areti, Kardamoutsa, Keramos and other historical monasteries, most of them located in picturesque spots, offer their beauty and peacefulness to the visitors. Fourni, kastelli, Limnes, Nikithiano, Choumeriako, Vrysses, Voulismeni, Latsida, Milatos and so many other villages, that are of major natural, architectural, historical, and religious interest. Its also very easy to visit the most significant archeological sights of Crete, such as the famous Minoan Palace of Knossos and the Minoan Palace of Malia, to admire the well preserved foundings of Crete's most important period.
