Peaceful & relaxing, Mid-Century on the beach with glorious water & sunset views. This simple 1950's summer home is perched on a hill with views of Peconic Bay from most rooms and was the first house built in Hay Beach. The house, much of it still original, has been in our family for 40 years and we're gradually updating bit by bit. So far we've installed air conditioning & new windows. We've often seen deer, wild turkeys and have a chipmunk that lives under the big oak outside the living room. An osprey nest is perched up on a pole nearby. We love watching the boats sail by, while having a glass of wine with cheese and crackers under the oak tree as the sun sets. Go with the flow of the vintage vibe, and have "Mad Men" era cocktails: Martini glasses, vintage ice bucket and cocktail shaker included! The open plan living room/dining room/ kitchen invites you to enjoy views all day long from every vantage point. The vintage kitchen is original to the house, and is stocked with every thing you need (tea kettle, drip coffee makers, french press, cookware, pasta pot, griddle, blender, crock pot, microwave & dishwasher). BYO Keurig or Nespresso if you prefer. We are delighted to have assorted teas, and coffee available for your breakfast. Find basic condiments in the fridge. There is an IGA grocery store & a Fish Market located nearby in the town center, as well as Marie Eiffel's Market for upscale specialty & gourmet groceries. The Primary Bedroom with a king sized bed is tucked away in it's own wing at the opposite end of the house from the other 3 bedrooms, which affords quiet and privacy. The ensuite bathroom is original, and has a shower. The 3 other bedrooms (2 with Queen sized beds & 1 with a full size) share a bathroom with a tub/shower, sink & toilet. One bedroom has an ensuite half bathroom with sink & toilet. For your convenience we have shampoos, conditioners and hair dryers in the bathrooms. The house might be best for children over 8 as it is not child proofed, and has no children's amenities. Just out the sliding glass door there is a retaining wall that has a sudden drop off into bushes so its not ideal for toddlers. Our utmost concern is for the safety of all our guests. Our cable is basic, but our tv is smart so bring your passwords to log in to your favorite streaming channels. There is ductless air conditioning in all the rooms. On days that are not too hot you may find the dehumidifier setting to be quite sufficient or you won't even need the AC at all, as this house was built to be a cool summer cottage with insulating cinder block walls and good cross ventilation. I like to be there to greet guests upon arrival, and demonstrate how to hook up the portable dishwasher, and answer any other questions. If I can't be there, I'll text you the code to the lock box where you can find the key, and will send little videos. Amble down the lawn to the beach, swim, lie in the sun or read, or look for shooting stars at night. Unfortunately none of the docks you see in the photos are ours. They are privately owned by neighbors and we ask that you respect their no trespassing signs. We have beach towels, swim noodles & lawn chairs for your use. After the beach, rinse off salt and sand in our outdoor shower. Bring your bikes or you can rent some at Piccozzi's. Bring your kayaks to put in right here at the beach which is a town landing. Hike in Mashomack Nature Preserve. Play Backgammon, Scrabble or Monopoly. Savor delicious meals in the many Island restaurants. Go back in time at the Shelter Island Historical Society. Visit Sylvester Manor: tour the 17th century house & grounds, then shop at their organic farm stand. Listen to a concert by blossoming young musicians at the Perlman Music Camp. Play mini golf at The Whale’s Tale. Get an ice cream at The Tuck Shop. Get your Om on at Shelter Island Yoga & Fitness. Go fishing. Play tennis. Pop over to explore Greenport. Visit the Hamptons and see the Jackson Pollock House, the Parrish Art Museum, the LongHouse Reserve, or the Montauk Lighthouse. Day trip to sip at North Fork Vinyards. The Shelter Island Reporter is the local, small town newspaper. You’ll get the scoop on weekly events listed such as the Memorial Day parade, 4th of July fireworks, the Annual Fire Department Chicken Dinner, movies at the library, concerts, art shows, etc. You'll have the house to yourself. I will be available to answer questions by text. This is a quiet, low key, family neighborhood. Please be considerate of our neighbors. No loud parties please. Greenport, on the North Fork of Long Island, has a Long Island Railroad station, and Hampton Jitney Stop. Both are steps from the Shelter Island North Ferry. It's best if you have a car to get around on the island. Take the South Ferry to the South Fork. Town Beaches require a parking sticker for your car, available at town hall. Bathrooms: Please, NO Charmin bath tissue! It clogs our septic system! Please don't flush wipes and feminine products. Please use the hair catcher over the tub drain. Laundry Room: Find stacks of beach towels & swim noodles on the shelves, and a drying rack for wet bathing suits. Kitchen: The fabulous 50's kitchen has a portable dishwasher, easy to roll to the sink & hook up. Garbage/ Recycling: All recyclables and garbage must be brought to the Town Recycling Center. Glass, plastic & metal pre-sorting containers are by the stove. Other garbage must be in "town bags", purchased at the IGA or Town Recycling Center. We have a compost bucket, to take fruit & vegetable garbage to a compost bin across the driveway, though the raccoons usually eat it overnight before it has a chance to compost! Please, don’t compost meat or fish products. Please throw corn cobs & husks in the regular trash as they don’t compost quickly enough. When you’re ready to leave, please leave slept in beds unmade, and toss used towels in the shower & tub. We expect that our guests will treat our home with the same respect that we do, to make it a wonderful experience for all.
