Sainte Marie Island or Nosy Boraha is a small tropical island 5 km x 60 km, located on the east coast of Madagascar and near which, from mid-June to end of September humpback whales meet to breed in the waters lukewarm Indian Ocean. Sainte Marie Island is a great place to discover and observe humpback whales (megaptera novaengliae). From June to the end of September, you will have the chance to see groups of humpback whales (megaptera) coming from Antarctica in the Canal of St. Mary. The whale is a cetacean mammal about 14 meters long with a weight of about 30 tons depending on the individuals. By boat, and in small groups, you will have the possibility with our partner, to observe to photograph the whales and you will be dazzled by their acrobatic prowess. They make extraordinary jumps out of the water. Humpback whales come from Antarctica to the Indian Ocean to breed from June to October, but they do not feed on it. They have left the cold waters to meet, mate and give birth in the warm waters of the channel of St. Mary.They have large pectoral and their songs play an important role in this competition sexual parades. During "safari" you can meet mothers and their calves and groups of several individuals. We chose our partner because it is respectful of the code of good conduct during your whale watching.
