It has an area of about 22 km², and is about 10 km long and about 5 km wide at the widest point. There are 125 permanent residents, but in the summer months, around 60,000 tourists come to Anholt. They stay in the approximately 350 cottages, at the campsite and in the up to 450 boats that are in the harbor. Today, tourism is the main occupation, but just over a generation ago it was fishing. Anholt is geologically interesting, as the western end is a moraine landscape, and the eastern end is lowland, and known as the "Desert". It was formed during the last ice age, when the ice edge was once in the middle of the island, forming the two vastly different landscapes. Anholt is absolutely perfect for long walks in the unique nature, and you can immerse yourself in the details and beauty of the landscape. At the same time, the island is so isolated that it is not disturbed by background light, so one of the most beautiful starry skies can be seen. Of course, it's best in the dark season, and not in the bright summer. Also, a trip to the lighthouse is recommended. The place was the only piece of Denmark occupied by England during the Napoleonic Wars, and the lighthouse itself is one of the country's highest and most beautiful. It is possible to get up in by special occasions, but inquire about it locally. A trip around the moraine landscape is also recommended and a trip to the island's highest point "Sønderbjerg" is mandatory and provides a moment for reflection in the amazing view, west towards Djursland, south over the sea and east towards the desert.
