Description
In the hills of Dixon, northern New Mexico, this beautiful winemaker’s home belongs to the co-owners of Vivac Winery. It sits among apple trees and looks out over the vineyard. The house is well suited for a writer’s retreat, a romantic getaway, or a home base for exploring three nearby ski areas and two rivers. Guests are invited to a complimentary wine tasting at Vivac Winery. There are plenty of options for local hikes, or easy day trips to the museums and galleries of Taos and Santa Fe. The space **The Vineyard House:** Constructed in 2009 by Michele Padberg's father, David Bartley, David has had a thriving construction business in northern New Mexico since 1972. This beautiful home was constructed with high R factor rostra block, which provides excellent insulation that naturally keeps it cool during summer and warm in winter through simple adjustments like opening or closing windows and blinds. The house is equipped with air conditioning and central under-floor heating. The floorplan/interior design of the house was created by Jesse and Michele Padberg. They wanted the small footprint to be easy to step away from/return to, allowing them to indulge in their favorite activity, travel! Each detail, from the hand-distressed corrugated metal ceiling to the uniquely colored cement floors and stainless steel accents, was lovingly chosen to imbue the home with artistic flair and a personal touch. Located next to Jesse's parents' home, The Vineyard House is part of a family farm where Jesse and his brother Chris grew up. They have since transformed a section of this private land into the Vivac Winery winemaking facility and planted vineyards. While enjoying your stay, you might spot sheep and chickens grazing nearby. The friendly sheepdog, Mamba, may also visit, but if her company is not desired, kindly shoo her away, and please do not allow her inside the house. **The Fire Vineyard:** Visible from the front window and porch, The Fire Vineyard belongs to Vivac Winery. Its name commemorates a childhood incident where the winemakers, as boys, accidentally set the property aflame with fireworks. This serendipitous history influenced the vineyard’s naming after the land was acquired years later and became the site for their first grape plantings. Initially planted with French Hybrid grapes, after five years, the winemakers assessed the grape quality and pivoted to grapes that would make the type of wine they wanted to make, European-style dry wines. Adding their passion for research/education to the mix, they planted 18 different Vinefera grapes as test plots to see what would grow at our unique 6200ft extreme altitude, microclimate. Their success led to the planting at the 1725 Vineyard near the tasting room and further expansion of The Fire Vineyard in 2013. **Garden Offerings:** Guests are welcome to enjoy the natural bounty surrounding the house. Feel free to pick apples from the Golden Delicious trees near the parking area, forage for wild asparagus growing around the ditch, and savor the homegrown tomatoes and fresh basil cultivated annually in the front garden.
