Hinderwell was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Hildrewell, a derivation of Hilda's Well, named for the Abbess of Whitby who was travelling through the parish in a drought and was asked to intercede. Her prayers were answered when a spring appeared near the sight of the present Parish Church, and this spring has continued to flow from the hillside to this day.
