Description

Come and experience something different. Hand built, everything in this unique little home has been crafted to reflect the beauty of the Mountains, Lakes and History of the Mackenzie. Shepherd's Rest sits in the corner of a stunning Sheep and Beef Farm, set before the high mountain ranges of the Mackenzie basin. Located just 5 minutes south of the idyllic township of Fairlie. Built from locally grown Oregon and Cedar trees, cut and sawn right here in the Mackenzie. Note: Composting Toilet. The space Shepard's Rest Tiny Home is a beautifully unique house surrounded by trees and animals. The main bedroom has a feather-soft queen bed, with views of the mountains and cows grazing as you open the curtains on those crisp cold mornings. It has a great flow, with stairs to access the mezzanine bedroom that houses a comfy queen bed. This bedroom is the warmest, as the open plan cathedral ceiling captures all of the warmth from the fire. The glow of the fire reflected on the ceiling is a perfect scene in bed, on those snowy winter nights. The kitchen is extremely accessible, large enough that its easy to forget that you are cooking in a tiny home. The timber cupboard doors are crafted from reclaimed wall paneling from a historic homestead built in the 1880s. You can still see the old saw blade marks carved into them. The bathroom makes you feel as if you've stepped into a sauna, showcasing timber paneling and cabinetry. It features a beautiful composting sawdust toilet, a low environmental impact alternative to conventional flushing toilets. Sit on the couch with your morning coffee and watch the sun hit the top of Fox Peak, or enjoy dinner on the deck watching the lambs chase each other through the paddocks. This region has so much to offer, with Timaru and Geraldine towards the coast, or head up into the High Country, traveling to Teakpo, Twizel, or Mount Cook. This is one of the few places in the world where there is still genuine adventure to be had. A few things to keep in mind - since we have gravity fed water, we do not have the high water pressure that you would find in towns and cities. The upstairs mezzanine bedroom is cozy but has a rather low ceiling, we would not recommend that particular bedroom for elderly visitors, or those who have mobility issues. Regarding the living space, the home is best suited for two people, four can comfortably stay the night, but we recommend if staying longer, please keep this in mind. Guest access The area is partially fenced, with clear boundaries indicated, please keep within this area. We ask that you do not access the paddock directly behind the house. Other things to note There is so much known as to the sights and experiences to be had in and around Fairlie. We have the famous Bakehouse, shops, eateries and parks; stop in at the heritage museum - our favourite is the pioneer exhibit, that showcases all the different covered-drawn wagons and historic homesteads. At the end of the road as you come into the farmstay, you can park up and head into the Gorge walking track, there are two walks to choose from, or simply spend some time at the river. Lake Opuha is a 15 minute drive north and a tranquil spot to picnic, or hit one of the three ski fields in the area. The hunting and game fishing opportunities in the area are among the best in the world! Whatever you choose, we are sure it will be memorable!
