Fijian Eco-Village Stay – The Vale at Nanumi Au

In Fijian, "Vale" means "house" or "home". So please, let us Welcome you HOME. This is not a resort, and it isn’t meant to be. The Vale is a private Fijian home set beside a mangrove forest and within walking distance of an active village community. Guests stay in their own peaceful space, while having the rare opportunity to experience everyday life in a Fijian village in a respectful and natural way. The space The Vale is a simple, comfortable island home designed for relaxed tropical living. • Private house for your group • Breezy open living spaces • Covered outdoor deck • Ocean and mangrove outlook • Large garden surroundings • Natural ventilation (fans, not air-conditioning) • Reliable Wi-Fi (stronger than most rural areas in Fiji) We intentionally keep the space connected to nature — you’ll feel the sea breeze, hear the birds at sunrise and the ocean at night. This is not luxury in the conventional sense. It is peace, space and authenticity. Guest access You’ll be warmly greeted by your hosts on arrival. Other things to note Village Etiquette Nanumi Au sits beside a real, active village community. Guests are always welcome, and you’ll find people incredibly warm and relaxed — a smile and a “Bula!” go a long way here. To help you feel comfortable, we’ll explain a few simple customs when you arrive. In general: • Please wear modest clothing when visiting the village (shoulders and knees covered) • Sundays are a quiet family and church day in the village • Always ask before taking photos of people or homes • Remove hats and sunglasses when meeting elders as a sign of respect • You are welcome to join kava, but participation is optional You won’t be expected to know everything — that’s our role to guide you. Guests often find these small differences become one of the most meaningful parts of experiencing Fiji beyond the resorts ⸻ Sevusevu (Cultural Welcome) Because Nanumi Au is connected to a living Fijian village community, guests are welcomed through a traditional sevusevu (kava offering) to the village elders. We organise and gently guide you through this on arrival — you won’t need to prepare anything. The sevusevu formally welcomes you onto the land and allows you to respectfully move through the village, meet families and take part in daily life. Many guests say it becomes the most meaningful part of their stay. A small contribution covers the yaqona and supports the village hosts directly. ⸻ Off-Grid Living Our property is completely off-the-grid and powered by solar energy, with generator backup if needed. You will still have lighting, refrigeration and Wi-Fi, but we do encourage mindful electricity use — especially overnight and during cloudy weather. Staying here gives you a real feel for sustainable island living. ⸻ Hot Water Showers are not heated. In Fiji’s tropical climate the water temperature is usually naturally warm and most guests actually find it refreshing after the heat of the day. (Very few people end up missing hot showers!) ⸻ Meals Rate includes breakfast for 2 adults and a basket of seasonal produce picked from the garden. Home-style meals can be arranged with the village women’s group and are paid directly to them. Food is seasonal, local and generously prepared — often cooked over fire or traditional methods. Guests frequently tell us the meals become a highlight of their stay.
