Bougainvillea House is a white house with lilac and white bougainvillea flowers growing around it, and situated only close to the Indian Ocean and Lamu Island's beaches. Let our very own cook, Eddie, cook and serve you delicious meals. The space The house contains three bedrooms, each with a large double bed (185 x 195 cm), a mosquito net and a ceiling fan. One of the bedrooms overlooks the small garden with coconut palms. Each bedroom is connected via an outside terrace. There is one bathroom with a shower and toilet for the guests. The water is solar heated via panels on the roof top. The living room is furnished with a wooden dining table and chairs, wicker armchairs, a sofa and a preserved Lamu wall. The rooftop of the house offers relaxing days under the banana fibre ceiling, or on lounge chairs. Eddie is the caretaker and cook of Bougainvillea House. He can prepare meals for you during your stay. You can write a list of things you want Eddie to buy, and inform him about what you would like to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner. He will prepare and serve the dishes unless you feel like doing so yourself. Discuss what you would like to eat for any eventual meal, one day in advance, so that you know how much it will cost and so that he has time to buy ingredients. Guest access You have access to the whole house. However please be aware of that we have one bathroom for all guests in the house. There is a second bathroom on the ground floor which is for Eddie. Other things to note Please be informed that we are not a hotel. We are a family who happen to own a house in Shela, and who rent it out to guests. We are there perhaps once per year. Eddie is therefore a vital part of making it all work. ---------- Once you have made a booking request I will send you a private message with information, much of which is similar to the below. I need to be sure that you have read it and that you approve. ---------- Eddie will arrange for someone to meet you at the airport on Manda island with a name sign, or at Shela. Our house is walking distance from Peponi Hotel. That person will take you to Shela with a boat. There is no internet access in the house however Peponi Hotel is close and offers wifi. You can alternatively visit the local mobile shop in Lamu harbor. Eddie knows which one. There purchase a SIM card, put it in your mobile phone, top it up with surf and use the mobile as a hotspot. Price and surf speed is good enough. There is one bathroom for guests (and one for Eddie on the ground floor). Therefore it is best to be comfortable sharing bathroom with those whom you have booked the house with. We have a side entrance to an outside shower under banana fibre roofing to shower off any sand before entering the house. Should there be a power cut we have a backup generator. Speak to Eddie about this upon your arrival. You will have to start it yourself if the power should cut at night. We have solar heated water in the house that is enough for a few shorter showers in a day. We have beach towels and regular towels for showering. If your party consists of 4 or more, we will hire a second staff during your stay so that we can better accommodate your needs. The extra cost for this is automatically regulated via Airbnb. Note that prices on Lamu are higher than you might expect, especially if you are used to travelling in other african regions and countries. No food is included in the pricing. Eddie can purchase everything for your meals. You must speak to him in before about what things cost so that you are informed of about how much your meals will cost. This minimizes uncomfortable surprises. Once he has bought any food you will have to reimburse him. Be aware of that there are local informal pricing mechanisms for example A, B, C for crabs (A being the most expensive). Always communicate with Eddie before he does the shopping if you have a budget and about how much your order may cost. Dinner is served latest 6 - 6:30 PM. Eddie will have to leave at the latest 7:30-7:45 PM to make it home with regular transportation. If you want later service, that can be arranged. No other guests than those whom are part of the booking are allowed to be served meals by Eddie or sleep over in the house without prior approval.
