Description

The 1870 Danskammer House is a charming, 3-story B&B with 5 guest suites, all with private baths; 4 indoor common spaces; and multiple outdoor porches, patios, terraces. Nestled in a small village perched above the Hudson River, the B&B affords scenic views over gardens, village rooftops, the river, and nearby mountains. Centrally located, the B&B is an ideal springboard for day trips: four-season recreation, dining venues, craft beverage tours, higher ed, and rich history & culture resources. The space The Worthington Whittredge Suite, one of five guest suites at the B&B, is located on the northwest corner of the second floor. The room is equipped with a queen-size bed, ensuite bathroom, and private closet. Furnishings include an Amish bed in native cherry, a reading and writing table, two side chairs, a console table, night stands, and multiple lamps. Oriental rugs highlight the refinished, original knotty pine floors. The suite's centerpiece is Whittredge’s river scene entitled A Fisherman’s Windlass, evoking a bucolic glimpse of fishing activities near Tivoli Bay. The room is bathed in soft shades of orange, and the décor echoes the pumpkin and mushroom coloration of the painting. With granite sink counter tops, Italian tile floors, subway tiled walls, and high-quality porcelain and chrome fixtures, the ensuite bathroom is fully up-to-date. The room’s expansive west-facing bay windows offer sight lines on the front yard and a large old maple tree. The Whittredge Suite provides individual guest control of the heating and cooling system and also offers an individually controlled ceiling fan in the bedroom and an energy-boost heater in the bathroom. The standard room rate assumes double occupancy, but may vary on weekends, seasonally, or during peak periods. A locally sourced breakfast and afternoon refreshment are included in the daily charge. Guest access Indoors, enjoy the top-floor Church Lounge in all seasons with its expansive sunrises over the Hudson River and Taconic Mountains and its filtered sunsets through tree-crested river hills. The Lounge provides robust WiFi and multiple ethernet ports. Relax in the spacious environment and prepare yourself a beverage at the coffee bar or store your locally purchased beverages in the micro-fridge. Choose a favorite nook from the many club chairs and multiple window benches, and then curl up with the latest morning news, a good book, a new musical CD, or a classic movie. Outdoors, in season, take afternoon tea on the front porch or rear patio, stroll through Danskammer’s gardens, or relax after dark by the fire pit on the gravel terrace. Robust WiFi is available everywhere on the grounds. In sunny weather, the Downing Garden Room -- where breakfasts are typically served -- offers abundant morning light and showcases Danskammer’s gardens, orchards, and berry patches in the backyard. Guests may also enjoy spending time in the more formal Lane Living Room, where they can engage the hosts and other guests in conversation. The hosts' bedroom, kitchen, laundry, and basement prep spaces are not available to guests. During your stay The hosts of Danskammer House enjoy greeting visitors to the Hudson Valley from the USA and abroad, and welcome them as guests into our home regardless of race, creed, ethnic background, national origin, sexual orientation, or other personal identities. In this small temporary community, the innkeepers encourage dialogue, practice discretion, and request mutual tolerance. Retired from the higher education and non-profit sectors, the multilingual innkeepers have had the good fortune to travel in all fifty states and to live in other parts of the world; accordingly, they and members of the staff are committed to extending the same gracious welcome and warm hospitality they have enjoyed elsewhere to guests from all walks of life. They are especially pleased to linger with visitors over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and introduce visitors to the famous -- and also little known -- treasures of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains corridor of upstate New York. With advance notice, the hosts may be able to meet guests from New York City and international visitors, whether arriving by Metro North and Amtrak trains at Poughkeepsie Rail Station or arriving by plane at Stewart International Airport. Other things to note Food and Beverage Service: All rates assume double occupancy and include a multi-course breakfast and afternoon refreshment for two. If so inclined, guests are encouraged to climb the stairs early each morning to the third-floor Church Lounge for a Hudson Valley sunrise and a first cup of coffee or tea. Downstairs, the hosts start early in the kitchen and enjoy preparing hearty breakfasts sourced from our own gardens as well as fresh, preserved, or cured local ingredients that showcase our gardens and other products of the Hudson Valley’s farms and orchards. Menus for, and the location of, the breakfast and an afternoon refreshment are published daily on the guest bulletin board in the Downing Garden Room and change frequently by season to highlight whatever may be fresh and local. The dishes themselves may emanate from the hosts’ food experiences during their travels and may sometimes reflect diverse culinary traditions throughout the United States and around the world. Breakfast is normally served in the Downing Garden Room, flooded with morning light. In fairer weather, breakfast may be taken al fresco on the backyard patio. From time to time during inclement weather, the innkeepers may offer breakfast in the more formal Cropsey Dining Room.
