A bucolic retreat near open fields with grazing sheep and forested hillsides, our house is only two hours from New York City, but feels like it’s in the middle of Vermont. Scenic drives, interesting shops and art and craft galleries, and delightful markets and restaurants are scattered throughout the quaint, historic towns of the Litchfield Hills. Hiking and other outdoor pursuits abound, from active sports to inspiring walks in nature. The space We have a large, rambling, country colonial in rural NW Connecticut, close to hiking, biking, swimming, paddling and skiing. The house is next to the Cathedral Pines and across the street from Mohawk State Forest and Mohawk Ski Area down the road. The Housatonic River and the Appalachian Trail are 5 minutes away. Area private schools--Hotchkiss, Kent, Salisbury, Marvelwood and Indian Mountain—are within a 20 minute drive. Great Barrington, Massachusetts and Berkshire attractions are 35-45 minutes away. Three cozy guest bedrooms are in their own wing with a separate entrance and staircase. There is one bedroom with a queen bed, one with a double and single bed, and one with two single beds. Two bathrooms are shared by three bedrooms, although often only two bedrooms are occupied at the same time. This listing is for the queen bedroom with a bathroom across the hall, shared with one other guest bedroom, if occupied. There are two other bedrooms available with separate listings. Families of 4-7 people can be comfortably accommodated in all three rooms. A single size airbed and a travel crib is available for a child or baby in their parents' room. Guests have use of the living room and WiFi is in all rooms. A small dining table, Keurig coffee maker, hot pot, mini frig and microwave are set up for guests' use in the upstairs hall room. Coffee, tea, dishes and silverware are supplied. Several markets and restaurants are a short drive away for take-out or eat in. Laundry facilities and greater kitchen access are available for longer stays and if prearranged. Guest access There is abundant parking in the driveway in front of the house and beside the garage. Taxi services meet most New York City trains from Wassaic train station, and Uber or Lyft may be available if arranged in advance. Covered Bridge Electric Bike Company in West Cornwall has hourly and daily rentals. Canoe and kayak rentals are available at Clarke Outdoors on the Housatonic River. Ski rentals and lessons are offered at Mohawk Mountain Ski Area. We have maps and website info for many of the hiking trails in the area's nature preserves and state parks. Many nice walks and more rigorous hikes are right outside our front door. During your stay I will be present during guest stays, and enjoy meeting my guests. Other things to note During these times of continued transmission of Covid and the Delta variant virus, and because bathrooms may be shared if all bedrooms are occupied, I ask that all guests be fully vaccinated. Please observe recommended safety precautions and mask wearing when close to others inside the house.
