Description
Lovely light-filled period cottage, which was once a granary store, set in a sizeable mature walled garden with views of the Downs beyond. Situated just outside historic Lewes, 15 minutes from Brighton and 2 minutes from mainline station (London 1 hour). The space The Barn at Aylwins is a lovely flint cottage dating from the 17th century with later additions, with plenty of features including beams and wood-burning stove. It has a lovely atmosphere, with whitewashed walls and white painted floorboards and is south-facing. We have decorated it with pieces from our online vintage furniture store, Lovely & Co - Midcentury Danish furniture, rustic benches, Eames chairs, Moroccan rugs and Welsh blankets. This is a family house, and we're happy for you to bring (well-behaved) pets. (Please note that the cottage is next to a working farm. The walled garden is completely enclosed but dogs who chase livestock would need to be kept on leads in the driveway). Space-wise, there are 3 good sized bedrooms, all with double beds. As well as this there is a good sized bathroom with a large bath and a separate walk-in shower. Downstairs, there is a large kitchen with American style fridge/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier, oven, hob and microwave. There is an open plan dining area with a table seating 6-8, a cloakroom and a living room with wood-burning stove. There is a TV with Apple TV, Netflix, Amazon etc. The decor is simple and rustic - most rooms have wooden or slate floors (ideal for children!). The cottage is next to a farm (great for fresh eggs in the morning), so you can sometimes hear the neighbours (sheep, cows, pigs and cockerel). While everything will be clean and tidy, this is very much a country cottage, with nothing too pristine or precious. The kitchen is old and a bit worn in places but the overall vibe is light and spacey. The delightful garden has a big lawn, a terrace and BBQ area, picnic table and benches, fruit trees and a fig tree for camps. Guest access Detached house, shared driveway (parking for 3 cars) and private walled garden. Other things to note There is a working farm and farm shop right next door so you will never run out of milk, and can pop over for fresh bread and eggs in the morning. They do meat and vegetables and a good selection of homemade cakes and pies. They also have a cafe. The cottage is set back from the road, up a (gated) driveway, and the back garden is enclosed, so this property is safe for children/pets. Aside from the shared drive, the cottage is self-contained and has a private walled garden. Our house is across the drive, which is also available to rent on Airbnb in summer/school holidays. Please also note that there is a swimming pool on the other side of the wall to the cottage's garden. This is not part of the Airbnb and is our private pool. There is a padlocked gate in the far corner of the cottage's garden but it is possible to climb over this. Guest access to the pool area is not permitted and please do not leave children unattended in the cottage's garden.
