Basil Tree Stone House
Description
Step back in time in this lovingly restored Maniot stone house, originally built in 1811, in Flomochori. Built in the traditional fortified “ohiro spiti” style, it features thick stone walls, low doorways, and an exterior stairway connecting two levels through a small outdoor area. Designed for defense, now a blend of heritage and comfort. Enjoy a private backyard with olive, lemon, and fig trees, plus bougainvillea—perfect for outdoor meals, morning coffee, or peaceful relaxation. The space -Ground Floor: Cozy living room with a 55” Smart, fully equipped kitchen, refrigerator, dining area, couch, a small sleeping nook (190 X 65), bioethanol fireplace, a/c, washer, and a bathroom featuring a traditional-style hammam. -Upper Floor: Two queen-size beds, a second 40” Smart TV, a/c, fan, full bathroom, small refrigerator and a hallway with a window that let in the cool Mani breeze at night. -Traditional Layout: The two floors are not connected internally. As was typical in historic Maniot homes, you move between the floors via a small outdoor staircase. This layout reflects the historic architecture of the region, where homes were built for both everyday life and defense. The upper floor was used for sleeping, reception and safety, while the lower was for cooking or storage — a practical and strategic design shaped by centuries of vendettas and survival. -Separate Backyard: Located across a small alley from the house, the private backyard is a peaceful retreat with a table for enjoying your breakfast or coffee, shaded by an outdoor umbrella as well as an olive tree, bougainvillea, lemon tree, fig tree, and more. Other things to note 📌 Other Things to Note -The two levels are connected by an external staircase through a small outdoor area — a traditional Mani feature. -Doorways are low, a historical safety design. -In the upstairs bathroom, the hot and cold water controls are reversed compared to the downstairs shower. -Transportation by car is highly recommended as there is limited public transport in and around the village. -The tap water is not drinkable. -The home has undergone professional disinfestation for guest comfort.
