Here are the best tips in the immediate vicinity: 1. Natural highlights right outside the front door • The Devil's Kitchen: This is probably the most famous destination in Obergünzburg. This is an impressive geotope with huge boulders in the forest that look like they have been thrown together indiscriminately. • Tip: A hike there can be perfectly combined with a stop at the historic Schlossmühle Liebenthann. Hiking in the Günztal: Obergünzburg is located in the idyllic Günztal. There are around 200 km of hiking trails, such as the Dillinger Weg through rustic hillside forests or the Günztalrunde. Elbsee: About 11 km away is this beautiful swimming lake. It offers boat rental, a campsite and a restaurant – ideal for a relaxing summer day. 2. Culture & Museums in Obergünzburg • South Sea collection: A real unique piece! In the Historical Museum Obergünzburg you will find an extraordinary collection from the South Seas, which goes back to the imperial naval officer Karl Nauer. • Historic marketplace: Stroll through the center of the village with St. Martin's Church (15th century) and visit Nikolausberg with its old trees and the crossroads. 3. Attractions in the vicinity (up to about 25 km) • Ottobeuren (approx. 14 km): The local Benedictine abbey with its huge baroque basilica is world famous and absolutely worth seeing. • Irsee Monastery (about 14 km): A former Benedictine monastery with its own brewery. The "Irseer Klosterbräu" is known far beyond the region. • Kaufbeuren (approx. 15 km): The historic old town with the five-button tower and the town hall is worth a trip. The Isergebirge Museum in Neugablonz is also interesting. • Kempten (about 20 km): As one of the oldest cities in Germany, Kempten offers great shopping opportunities, the residence and the Cambodunum Archaeological Park. 4. For families with children • Eselhof Allinger: In Obergünzburg-Eschers you can take donkey carriage rides or alpaca hikes. • Skyline Park (approx. 25 km): This large amusement park is located near Bad Wörishofen and offers many attractions for all ages. • Forest knowledge playground: Right in Obergünzburg there are educational play opportunities for children in the middle of nature. From Obergünzburg you can reach many of the most famous sights of the Allgäu and the Bavarian Alps in a short time. Here are the distances and descriptions for your destinations: 1. Füssen (Royal Castles) • Distance: about 56 km | Travel time: about 40 min. (via A7) • Description: Füssen is world-famous for the castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in neighboring Schwangau. The historic old town of Füssen with the High Castle and the monastery of St. Mang is also very worth seeing. A walk to the Lechfall completes the visit. 2. Oberstdorf • Distance: approx. 60 km | Travel time: approx. 48 min. (via B19) • Description: The southernmost town in Germany is a mecca for hikers and winter sports enthusiasts. Highlights include the Nebelhorn (great views of 400 peaks), the Fellhorn and the impressive Heini Klopfer ski jumping hill. The place itself invites you to stroll and stop by. 3. Breitach Gorge (near Oberstdorf) • Distance: approx. 62 km | Travel time: approx. 50 min. • Description: This is the deepest rock gorge in Central Europe. A well-secured hiking trail leads you directly past the roaring masses of water. Especially in the rain, the gorge is spectacular, as even more water shoots through the narrow rock walls. In winter, it often freezes into a bizarre ice world. 4. Zugspitze (via Garmisch-Partenkirchen/Eibsee) • Distance: approx. 110 km | Travel time: approx. 1 h 30 min. • Description: Germany's highest mountain (2,962 m). You can either go from Garmisch by cog railway or from Eibsee by the ultra-modern cable car to the summit. A 4-country panorama awaits you upstairs. A detour to the crystal clear Eibsee at the foot of the mountain is an absolute must. Tips for your planning: • Breitach Gorge: Wear sturdy shoes and bring a rain jacket (it often drips from the walls). • Zugspitze/Castles: For Neuschwanstein and the Zugspitzbahn, you should definitely reserve tickets online in advance, as they are often booked days in advance. • Start early: Füssen and the Breitach Gorge are especially popular; it is best to be there before 10:00 am.
