Description
Welcome to Kummel & Kwel - my little hideaway beside the Reitdiep river. When I moved in last year, the first thing I did was set up the guest space so that I could share this idyllic landscape of wide open fields, picturesque villages and endless skies with others. This is a dream in progress - I’ve got lots of plans for it! Right now, I’m reworking the garden for the resident hedgehog, my flock of chickens and the bumblebees that live in the compost heap. Thanks for being part of it. The space Kummel & Kwel is tucked away in the tiny and quiet hamlet of Schouwerzijl, home to just under a hundred people. Life moves slowly here, but there’s much to explore just a short drive or bike ride away. You can catch the ferry to Schiermonnikoog or Borkum, meander through the wide open landscapes of Lauwersmeer National Park or the historic Middag-Humsterland region, or stop by a nearby country house or café. If you’re craving a bit more hustle and bustle, the city of Groningen’s close also. That said, you don’t have to go anywhere to have a fulfilling day. There’s a hidden swimming spot just a few minutes’ walk from the house - perfect for a cold plunge and a good book after a coffee on the patio. After, take a complimentary kayak to explore the many waterways. In the evening, you can climb the dike behind the house to watch the sunset stretch out across the fields. The house itself is split into two parts. I live in the original 1930’s main house. The B&B is in a contemporary, light-filled annex. Around the house, there’s a garden which I’m currently reworking for the resident hedgehog, my flock of chickens and a colony of bumblebees that now live in the compost heap. Guest access You’ll have your own front door at Kummel & Kwel, so you can come and go as you please. Step inside and you’ll find a small entrance hall, where you can hang your coat and leave your shoes. From there, you can see into the wild garden and the wide-open fields beyond. During your stay, that’s all yours. There's wood by the front door, should you wish to use the fire pit. The guest space, in a separate annex, is connected to the main house by a single door. As such, I’m always nearby to help but at the same time, you’ll have complete privacy if and when you need it. From the hallway, you’ll first come to the bathroom which has a shower with excellent water pressure. Then you’ll enter the main space: a bright and cosy 30 m² bedroom with large windows and great views. There’s a comfortable sitting area with armchairs, a desk, and a small stove to lift the mood on cold evenings or grey days. I've done my best to make the space comfortable and full of rural charm. It's full of thoughtful touches, such as original art, vintage finds, and handmade details. And last but not least: beside the house there are two kayaks which you are welcome to use! Other things to note Breakfast is not included in the price, but available if you want it. I can do a light breakfast, which is great if you like to go out for brunch later but need some food to get you going. It includes granola, yoghurt, fruit juice, jam, honey, fresh fruit and crispbread. This costs €7,50 per person per night. If you’re keen on something a little more substantial, I can add sourdough bread, eggs (which you can boil yourself) and cheese for an additional €7,50 p.p.p.n. What’s included depends on what’s fresh and available, as I try to source as much as I can from local farms and shops. Of course, I’m also happy to provide further snacks and drinks. If you like, I can make sure there’s a ‘borrelplank’ (savoury afternoon snacks, €22,50) waiting for you. There’s a vineyard not even a mile down the road, if you’d like a glass of wine to go with it (€30 per bottle) or you can go for a selection of locally brewed beers (€20 per 4). If you have any other requests, please don’t hesitate to ask! Just a quick note: this is my home, not a hotel. As such, there are a few simple house rules, which I’ll share with you in the guide before your stay. Nothing unusual, just a few things to help us all feel comfortable. I’ve done my best to make everything as cosy and thoughtful as possible, but you may notice that some bits are still a work in progress - I’ve got big plans for the place! If you're curious, I’m always happy to tell you more. Also, keep in mind that this is the countryside. On the one hand, it’s quiet, but it is a working landscape. Now and then, the local farmer might be out in the field behind the house and you’ll see him when you open the curtains. It might smell like manure in the spring. The neighbour’s rooster may beat your alarm clock. And there’s the occasional burst of weekend DIY. It’s all part of the charm!
