A Historic Castle, walk in the footsteps of the Prince Bishops of Durham, the original ‘Kings of the North’. Auckland Castle reopened in 2019 following major conservation work. The racecourse is less than 1 mile from the country park Hamsterley Forest A large forest offering scenic walking trails fantastic for runners, hikers and mountain bikers, many picnic spots on fields and river banks Great for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore nature. Raby Castle and its beautiful gardens and wild roaming deer Durham City: Approximately 11 miles, around a 20-minute drive with its cathedral, castle and river right in the city and very easy to negotiate (an absolute must experience) Chester-le-Street home of Durham cricket and several England games throughout the summer months Newcastle upon Tyne: Around 30 miles, typically a 50-minute drive. Middlesbrough: 22 miles, a 40-minute drive. Barnard Castle: 14 Miles, 25-minute drive time. York: 64 miles, a drive of around 1 hour and 20 minutes.
