Gertrude, a cosy shepherd's hut

Meet Gertrude, a lovingly restored Word War II ammunition trailer transformed in 2024/25 into a versatile space filled with charm and character. This building is designed to seamlessly blend practically with aesthetic appeal. There is a balcony or terrace, complete with a larch railing, this terrace is ideal for reading, sipping drinks in the sunset, or enjoying alfresco dining whilst listening to the murmur of the river. The space Enjoy Gertrude in any weather. She's fully insulated - floors, walls and roof with double glazed hardwood doors and windows. A woodburning stove to ensure warmth on cooler days, while the off grid copper lighting, powered by roof mounted solar panels and a concealed leisure battery in a repurposed ammo box, adds cozy charm and eco-friendly flair. Every detail of Gertrude has been carefully crafted to evoke a vintage aesthetic. Features include Bakelite-style light switches, copper ceiling and wall lights, copper curtain rails, handmade herringbone tweed curtains, and a classic black metal LPG-powered stove. Gertrude boasts natural chalk-pine tongue and groove panelling and pine timber floors stained in a rich medium oak tone. The accommodation provides double bed and a sofa which clicks into a bed also for the third person if needed. The exterior walls are constructed from insulated aluminium, layered with a weatherproof membrane, and finally clad in UK grown larch. On top a curved corrugated galvanised roof for durability and charm. The site also has a sauna and cold bath available on a booking system. The Sanctuary is unique in that with only five pitches it is small and intimate but can also be booked privately for events such as family gatherings.
