The space Owlers Cottage, a stylish hideaway near the sands Named after the owlers, the smugglers who once moved contraband across Romney Marsh under cover of darkness, Owlers Cottage offers a rather more comfortable way to escape to the coast. Just 0.3 miles from the foot of the dunes, this two-bedroom cottage is made for easy beach holidays. There's a sunny enclosed garden for lazy lunches and sandy dogs, a proper suntrap when the weather plays along, and plenty of home comforts when you're ready to put your feet up. The kitchen, dining and sitting areas flow together, so nobody disappears while dinner is being made. The kitchen includes: • Electric oven • Ceramic hob • Fridge/freezer • Dishwasher • Microwave • Air fryer • Kettle and toaster • Nespresso machine with Grind pods provided There's dining space inside for leisurely breakfasts and cosy suppers, while doors lead straight out to the garden when the weather calls for eating outdoors. Afterwards, sink into the sofa in front of the decorative fire and 40-inch Sky Glass TV, find a film, catch the match or ask Alexa to provide the soundtrack. There are board games and books for rainy afternoons and slower evenings too. Sleep: After a day of sea air and sandy feet, the bedrooms are calm, comfortable places to retreat. Garden and utility room: The fully enclosed garden is a real little suntrap and one of our favourite parts of Owlers Cottage. Outside you'll find: • Outdoor dining for four • Weber charcoal BBQ • Space for four-legged guests to potter about It's made for slow mornings, lazy lunches and a glass of something cold as the day winds down. The separate utility room has: • Washing machine • Dryer • Dog bowls Particularly useful after beach days, muddy walks and sandy swimsuits. Step out and explore: • Camber Sands, 0.3 miles Door to the foot of the dunes, and yes, we've actually measured it. Beyond them you'll find one of the loveliest stretches of sandy beach on the south coast, with plenty of room to find your own patch. • Rye, 3.8 miles by road Around an 8-minute drive away, with cobbled streets, independent shops, antique treasures, cafés, pubs and some excellent places to eat. If you fancy stretching your legs, it’s also a mostly flat 3.1-mile countryside walk, with big skies, plenty of sheep for company and, if you’re lucky, a barn owl or two. They’re our favourite bit. • The Owl Pub, around 0.4 miles on foot The village pub and our local, with excellent food and a relaxed, dog-friendly atmosphere. It’s an easy, mostly flat walk from the cottage. One thing to note, they don’t accept children under 5. • Harry's at The Gallivant, around 0.3 miles on foot Classic French bistro cooking and our pick for a special meal in the village. Close enough that nobody needs to drive or draw straws for designated driver. It's reservation only, with age limits for younger children and some restrictions for dogs, so it's worth checking with them when you book. Then there are miles of beach walks, Romney Marsh countryside, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve and plenty more to discover when you feel like venturing further. Owlers Cottage is somewhere to unpack, slow down and slip very quickly into seaside mode. Sandy toes, sleepy dogs and another day on the beach tomorrow. Guest access You'll have the whole cottage and enclosed garden to yourselves during your stay, so unpack, make yourselves at home and enjoy it. Other things to note The house Owlers Cottage sleeps up to four guests and works particularly well for a couple or small family. There is one king bedroom and one twin bedroom. Four adults are absolutely possible, but the cottage may feel a little cosy, so it's worth bearing that in mind when deciding whether it's right for your group. We provide a travel cot, highchair and stairgate, but the cottage isn't presented as a fully baby-proofed or childproofed home, so families with very young children may need to take a little extra care. The garden is fully enclosed and dogs can potter about happily, though it's worth an eye on a particularly small or determined escape artist on the first day. This is a much-loved holiday home rather than a hotel, and we simply ask that you treat it with the same care you would your own. If anything isn't quite right during your stay, please tell us. We're nearby and will always do our best to get things sorted quickly. The area Camber is a small, laid-back seaside village, and that's exactly why we love it. What it lacks in high streets and nightlife, it more than makes up for with miles of golden sand, grassy dunes and enormous skies. There's a cracking local pub, a top-notch restaurant and a handful of places for the essentials, but life here is deliberately simple. Days revolve around beach walks, sea swims and wondering whether it's too early for an ice cream. Evenings are quiet, nights properly dark, and the soundtrack tends to be more wildlife and waves than traffic. Camber's eating-out options are fairly limited generally, so with very young children Rye, around 8 minutes away by car, has much more choice and plenty of family-friendly places to eat. If you want bright lights, lots of shops and late-night bustle, Camber probably isn't the place. But if calm, cosy and coastal sounds rather more like it, you'll feel right at home.
