Locality information The intertwined villages of Histon and Impington are traditional commuter villages serving Cambridge and surrounding areas. There are two primary schools, a secondary school, a leisure centre, post office, several cafes, pubs and restaurants, and a range of small, useful shops and services including two pharmacies and a general stores selling bread, milk and other essentials. Most cafes, pubs, restaurants and amenities are within a 15 minute walk of the Hideaway. There is a general store just 5 minutes walk away. Historical context and the villages today Histon and Impington are thought to have originated from settlements dating back to at least the Iron age. In the sixth century it is believed that a tribe called the 'Empings' lived in Impington. As time passed, several churches were built in the village, with the oldest (St Andrews Church in Histon) dating back to the 13th century. The opening of the railway line connecting Cambridge to Huntingdon and St Ives in 1847, fuelled the expansion of the villages. This railway line closed in the 1980s, and has now been replaced with a 'guided busway' which opened in 2011. The old station is now a lovely cafe (Station House Cafe) and the buses to Cambridge, St Ives and Huntingdon all run from just outside the cafe (which is just 150m from the Hideaway). The old station area is currently being upgraded and construction work is in operation. However, buses to Cambridge are continuing to run as normal, and the Station House Cafe and general stores (located opposite the cafe) remain open, and popular. The cafe continues to serve delicious coffee and is a lovely warm place to sit in winter, with a beautiful terrace to enjoy in the summer months. The cafe is just 5 minutes walk from the Hideaway. Histon and Impington are well known for being home to the 'Chivers' Jam factory which was once the main employer in the area. Today, the factory is still in operation, though on a much smaller scale. If you walk down the guided busway pedestrian path from Impington (towards St Ives) you can still see the chimneys operating and smell the jam as you go by! Since the scaling back of Chivers, many local residents now work at the University or the local Science Park. The chivers factory once extended right up to the Hideaway's location, but has since been scaled back, and next to the Hideaway where the jam factory once stood, is the new UK headquarters of 'Nuclera', a multi-million pound scientific research company founded by two University of Cambridge PhD students in 2013 who launched their new home next to the Hideaway in 2023. Histon and Impington have agricultural and industrial roots and now share in Cambridge's scientific future. There is sadly a lack of mountains and sea-views! and the villages share the flat, land-locked asthetic of many villages in the fens. However, the close proximity of the villages to Cambridge, the A14, the M11, Stanstead and near-by places of interest such as Anglesey Abbey, the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, and Wimpole Hall, make this a unique and great place to stay!
