The Dam Camp on the River
The Dam Camp on the River
Description
This off-grid camp was built in 1891 and sits on ITS 83 Trail, along the Lower Mattawamkeag River, a half mile from Bible Point. No running water or electricity. All the essentials: outhouse, beds, kitchen, wood stove. The camp's rustic charm is about as authentic as it gets and is accessible by snowmobile or ATV when the trails are open, or a quarter mile hike from the nearest parking area. Pack in, pack out and enjoy the solitude that's unique to the Maine woods. The space Think of this as camping, but indoors with actual beds and an outhouse. It might be easier to start with the things we don't have at this location. NO electricity NO running water NO indoor plumbing of any kind NO tv or wi-fi (obviously) Now that we have that out of the way, let's get to the awesome amenities we do have! The Dam Camp sleeps up to 5 people on a variety of beds with new mattresses and linens. Downstairs you will find an open floor plan with two twin beds and a handmade sofa nestled around the wood stove. Also downstairs is a rustic kitchen setup with gas burners, a basin and a variety of camp-style cooking gear. Upstairs is a large loft with a full bed, twin bed, and a futon. Linens are provided for the beds, but not the futon. Throughout the camp are propane lights and several windows with screens for ventilation. You might notice a vintage fridge in the photos. Unfortunately it is not operational, but is a great spot to store your dry goods. We recommend bringing coolers loaded with your favorite foods and beverages. For your water needs, you can bring bottled water and/or we provide jugs which can be used to fill at the onsite freshwater spring. A well-appointed outhouse provides comfortable accommodations and a solar shower (its a bag you hang on a tree, the sun heats the water, and you get a unique shower experience.) We provide basic essentials such as toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, coffee, sugar, powdered creamer, salt & pepper, etc. Guest access You have full access to the entire property, the cabin, the outhouse, and the river frontage. Other things to note The Dam Camp is situated in the wilderness of Southern Aroostook county. Access is available by vehicle via a system of dirt roads and trails, approximately 45 minutes off the paved road of Island Falls and Sherman. The nearest parking spot is located 1/4 mile from camp, meaning you will need to park and hike or bring along an ATV or snowmobile during the appropriate seasons. Given the limited access, we again encourage that you plan carefully and bring along any and all needs. A small grocery store is available in both Island Falls and Sherman, as well as local restaurants. But we are betting you didn't seek out this vacation for its night life, so just bring your fishing poles and catch your dinner!
