The Star Hotel in Kingussie, has a rich history closely tied to the local community. First opening the doors in 1892 and continuing to be a staple of hospitality in the region ever since. The hotel has undergone various changes and management over the years, reflecting the evolving needs of its guests. In the 1930s, the Star Hotel was managed by a local family, who were well-known in the area. Noted for their service and the car they ran, which became a recognisable symbol of the hotel during that era. Today, the Star Hotel offers modern amenities while retaining its historic charm. Featuring 21 bedrooms situated conveniently for those looking to explore nearby. Despite changes over the years, the hotel continues to serve as a central hub for not only visitors to Kingussie but also the locals. Maintaining its reputation for warm Scottish hospitality! Why “Jacobite” & “Wolf”? The White Rose stands as one of the most enduring symbols of the Jacobite cause, representing unwavering loyalty to the House of Stuart. In the 18th century, it was worn proudly by those who supported Prince Charles Edward Stuart—better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie—in his 1745 attempt to reclaim the throne lost by his grandfather, King James VII of Scotland and II of England, in 1688. His supporters, known as Jacobites (from the Latin “Jacobus” for James), rallied from across the Highlands, Lowlands, and even from France and Ireland. Despite their defeat at the Battle of Culloden, the Jacobite legacy lives on through memorials and stories, marking one of the most pivotal chapters in Scotland’s history. Kingussie, located in the heart of the Highlands, played a part in these historical events, inspiring the owners to name the Jacobite Bar & Grill after this rich heritage. Nearby, the ruins of a castle once belonging to Alexander Stewart, the infamous Wolf of Badenoch, remind us of the area’s medieval past. Stewart’s barracks were burnt by Jacobites in 1746, and today, the Wolf Sports Bar honours this fierce history with its name. Kingussie continues to reflect its heritage with its elegant stone villas and grand hotels, including the Star Hotel, built in 1892 and now beautifully refurbished. Just beyond the village, visitors can explore Scotland’s history at the Highland Folk Museum or experience wildlife at the Highland Wildlife Park, both offering a glimpse into Scotland’s unique landscape and culture.
