Yukinoya Furusawa-Tei

Description

Located in the Anyoji village of Tokamachi, Niigata, along the Shinano River, this area has flourished for centuries through rice farming and textile weaving. "Yukinoya Furusawa-tei" is a 150-year-old traditional farmhouse from the late Edo period, now reimagined as an exclusive private villa for one group per day. We offer an immersive experience where you can feel the wisdom and spirit of the "Snow Country" people through all five senses. The space ― For guests reading in English ― One group. One night. One house that has stood for 150 years. Yukinoya Furusawa-tei is a meticulously restored Edo-period manor in the ancient hamlet of Anyoji, Tokamachi — deep in the snow country of Niigata, Japan. Once home to a family of local prominence, the house has been carefully brought back to life as a private retreat for those seeking something the guidebooks rarely reach. Every guest who has stayed here has given it 5 stars. ― What awaits you ― The morning begins with breakfast prepared by a local mother: seasonal ingredients, recipes passed down through generations, and the kind of quiet care that no restaurant can manufacture. Sit around the irori — a traditional sunken hearth — and let the day start slowly. In winter, the world outside disappears under three to four metres of snow. The silence is unlike anything most guests have experienced. In spring, the terraced rice fields fill with meltwater and the mountains turn green almost overnight. In summer, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale brings the valley alive with over 200 works by artists including James Turrell and Cai Guo-Qiang. In autumn, the forests go amber and gold. There is no bad season. There is only the question of which version of this place you want to find. ― The space ― The entire property is yours. No shared corridors, no other guests — complete privacy for up to 10 people. ・Dining & kitchen: A large table centred on a traditional irori hearth, fully equipped kitchen for self-catering ・Living area: A classic wood-burning stove that heats the whole building, a warm loft above ・Bedrooms: 2 rooms with 4 double beds + 6 premium mattress-style futons, flexible layout on request ・Bathrooms: Traditional ceramic bathtub, rain shower, 2 vanities, multiple bidet toilets across 2 floors ― Getting here ― Tokamachi Station is served by the Hokuhoku Line from Echigo-Yuzawa (Shinkansen from Tokyo, approx. 75 min total). Free shuttle from the station available on request. Free private parking on-site. Guest access Details will be provided upon check-in. Other things to note ・Winter driving (December–March): The roads around the property receive extremely heavy snowfall. A 4WD vehicle with winter tyres is strongly recommended. We are happy to arrange a shuttle from Tokamachi Station at no charge — please request in advance. ・Breakfast is prepared fresh each morning by a local mam and is included in the rate. ・The property is located in a quiet working hamlet. We ask guests to be mindful of neighbours, particularly in the evenings. ・Optional cultural activities (guided rice terrace walks, mountain foraging, craft workshops, etc.) can be arranged — please enquire at the time of booking.
