If you travel by public transport, get to Bačka Topola by bus or train (July 2022 - note the train line is closed for reconstruction, expected to re-open in 2024), then take a taxi (16km, ~€12). Bačka Topola is between Subotica and Novi Sad, and on the Budapest-Belgrade railway line. Stara Moravica is a large village of about 5,000 population with bakeries, butchers, two supermarkets, bank with ATM, post-office, pharmacies, hardware stores, weekly market, internet café, ice-cream parlour, clothes shops, phone/computer store, children’s playground, several convenience stores, kiosks and bars. The architecture and layout has completely retained the original Austro-Hungarian design with wide, tree-lined streets, and large houses with extensive grounds attached. It is an excellent base from which to visit all Vojvodina including Subotica, Sombor, Novi Sad and Fruška Gora. The REKI Rekreacioni Centar has swimming pools, wellness pool, bowling, bar and restaurant. €3.50/day for adults. There is a good children's playground, and horse/pony riding can usually be arranged. All amenities are about 10 minutes’ walk, or less than 5 minutes’ cycle, from the house. Almost everyone in Stara Moravica speaks Hungarian, and most speak Serbian. Young adults and children all speak some English. Older adults often speak German. Our House Manager Laszlo lives in the village. By profession he is a teacher and translator. He will welcome you to the house and help you during your stay with any arrangements you want to make (a modest fee may be payable if your requirements are particularly time-consuming. If this is the case he will tell you in advance). We provide factsheets about the village, cycle routes, and our favourite restaurants in nearby towns. The traditional design of the house means it stays relatively cool in summer and retains heat in winter. Heating when required (usually November to April) is by a traditional wood-fired Peć (Kachelofen) in the main house, a wood-fired stove in the kitchen, and electric storage heating in the bedrooms. Firewood is provided. Guests have to light and manage the fires themselves. It will take about 30 minutes a day which we hope you will consider a positive part of your Stara Moravica experience, but if you are not prepared to manage your own fires, please do not book to stay in the winter months because you will be cold. Guest access Guests have exclusive use of the property: the house, the garden the farmyard area and the orchard. Other things to note The next-door neighbours bake bread, pretzels and croissants each day Monday-Saturday. They are on sale from 3PM. Their oven is wood-fired. Depending on the wind direction, you may notice a little smoke in the garden around midday. It is a minor inconvenience that lasts less than 10 minutes, and is well worth the pleasure of having fresh artisan bread every afternoon just 25 metres from your house. In summer months, our house manager may need to access the garden and orchard to irrigate the plants and trees. He will always try to do this during the days between guests, but if he needs to visit during your stay he will arrange a time with you in advance. The property includes a field, which is rented to a local farmer. It is possible but very unlikely that the farmer will need to access the field during your stay. This has never happened during 10 years of AirBnB guests, but it is possible. If it happens, Laszlo will arrange the time with you.
