Description
Makindye House Annexe is a home away from home for students, volunteers, travellers, researchers etc. It is a green oasis of calm with mature gardens, helpful staff and friendly guests. Whether this is your first trip to Uganda or you are a regular visitor, a friendly welcome awaits you. Here you will find a real tropical paradise where we grow our own fruit and vegetables to share with our guests. We also provide free WiFi and free parking and have a member of staff to welcome you 24/7. The space Other than bedrooms, the communal spaces are for everyone to enjoy. This includes our lovely mature gardens and our new roof top terrace where you can enjoy watching the spectacular sunsets. Always get in touch to ask about availability as we have two listings and so the AirBnb calendar may not reflect the true situation. We offer a large, comfortable shared house in a quiet, safe Kampala suburb. Although we have a total of 9 bedrooms (including a family room), we have the rooms under two listings, which are Makindye House and Makindye House Annexe. Please ignore the online calendar but rather message me through Airbnb to find out about availability and I will get back to you as soon as possible and let you know what rooms are available for the dates that you have requested. We run the guest house as a 'not for profit' business, so are able to keep our charges low. This however does not mean that the standard of accommodation is low as you will see from the photos! We employ five excellent, long-serving staff to clean rooms, wash dishes, wash and iron clothes daily, and look after the garden. There is always a member of staff at the house 24/7. Dirty Laundry can be left in baskets and will be washed, dried and ironed by the staff and returned to guests. Most of our guests come from Europe and the USA and include medical students, development workers, development studies students, doctors, nurses, volunteers, freelancers, and tourists. Our house is a home away from home for our many young visitors and a secure environment for new visitors to Kampala. Our visitors often socialise together or hang out on the veranda or the roof-top terrace just chilling and chatting. We have a small kitchen garden, which when in season, provides guests with free fresh salad, cucumbers, tomatoes and beans. We also grow avocados, papaya, jack fruit and tree tomatoes that are made available to guests, when in season at no cost. We are within easy walking distance from the local market (10min), two supermarkets, a pharmacy, an internet cafe ( Coffee at Last), numerous small shops, and public transport. The Makindye Country Club is also within walking distance and they have a swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, a gym and a restaurant. If you are a tennis player, please pack your trainers. We have spare rackets at the house that you can borrow. A boda boda (small motorbike) is easy for a ride to and from the city centre or anywhere else. We have enough bike helmets for all guests so please don’t forget to wear one. Also, be sure to ask about using the Safe Boda Company as not all boda drivers are safe! Guest access Other than bedrooms, the communal spaces are for everyone to enjoy. This includes our lovely mature gardens and our new roof top terrace where you can enjoy watching the the spectacular sunsets. Please feel free to store your bags with staff members at the house if you have an evening or a late night flight. In the event of a power cut, there are portable solar- powered lights in all the rooms that last for eight hours or more. Wifi is available across Makindye House and Annexe on a 24/7 basis with solar power and batteries. Additionally, there is a charging station for mobile phones and laptops in the living room on the same basis. During your stay The house is run by myself and my partner Christopher along with our lovely housekeepers Grace and Jessica. Grace and Jessica continue to run the house when either or both of us are away. We enjoy interacting with guests when we are around, but more often the guests socialise with each other. It is a very sociable house so whether you are travelling alone, visiting Uganda or even Africa for the first time, you will find this a safe home away from home where a friendly welcome awaits you. There is a member of staff at the house 24/7 so don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions. Our wonderful housekeepers Grace and Jessica will give you a tour of the house once you have settled in. Many flights arrive late so don't worry about arriving late or at any time in the night. There will always be someone at the house to welcome you. Other things to note Neighbourhood Overview If you walk just a few meters up the hill you will get wonderful views of the city below. Located about 100m from our gate is Latitude Zero Hotel, which is probably the most beautiful hotel in Kampala. It also has stunning views over Lake Victoria and the city. You can use their pool for a daily fee, and other facilities. If you are a runner, then you can enjoy a morning or evening run around the hill. Makindye is a quiet neighbourhood. Coffee at Last, which is opposite the Makindye Country Club, has free WiFi, great coffee, brownies and take away meals. The Makindye Country Club or MCC has a swimming pool, squash and tennis courts, gym and a restaurant. You can get a long or short term membership.
