Description

Enjoy the tranquility of the forest, just a 10-minute walk from Abene's main street and 20 minutes from the ocean. The newly renovated bungalow is solar-powered with two wells, offering a simple, traditional design and basic amenities typical of rural Senegal. It's not a luxury hotel, but secure with locking doors. You may encounter small geckos and hear local sounds—drums, distant cooking, or radios—adding to the authentic rural experience. The space Our bungalow is newly renovated and outfitted with solar power and a water pump supplying the bathroom and kitchen with water from one of our two wells. It is a traditional bungalow with basic design and basic amenities that you may expect in rural Senegal. If you are looking for a fancy, European-standard hotel, this is not for you! While we have secure windows and a door that locks, you may get to meet small geckos in the house sometimes. And, being rural Senegal, you may hear drums being played and faint noises of others around you cooking or listening to a radio. We have four bedrooms, a small kitchen and a bathroom (with an European toilet and shower) which all join onto a main living room area. The covered porch wraps around the front of the house, meaning you can enjoy the nature while being protected from the sun or rain. There is also an outdoor bathroom (squat) and shower stall for „bucket shower“ in case you come back super sandy from the beach or have guests over. The property is very natural with beautiful, ancient local trees and plants, and also has landscaped paths and parking spaces. The roads leading to the house are small and unpaved, and easily passible in any car! The neighbours are all friendly and quiet, each with their own property as well. The kitchen has a small counter space with a sink, a place to dry the dishes and a small camping stove with two burners attached to a natural gas bottle. There are basic cooking and food preparation materials like pots, utensils, plates, cups, etc. The bathroom has a normal European toilet and showerhead. PLEASE NOTE – we do not have hot water (!). When we want hot water, we heat some in a big pot on the camping stove and take a traditional „bucket shower“. As long as we shower during the day, the water is usually warm enough. Guest access There is a guard living on the property in a small house of his own. His job is to support you in any way he can (except cooking–see 'interaction with guests') and keep an eye on the property. There is also a traditional fence all around the property, and generally speaking Abene is quite safe. Of course it is recommended you lock the house whenever you leave. Other things to note In the area: in a few minutes you can walk to small boutiques or a local restaurant and campements. A few minutes beyond that is the main road of Abene. During the big music festival in town you can hear some echo of the music, but you are far enough in the forest to still sleep! The beach is about a 20-minute walk and is a fantastic beach for swimming! The waves are usually calm and almost no undertow. There are also a few beachside shacks for fresh drinks and food.
