This three-bedroom, two-bath retreat comfortably sleeps up to six guests, offering a perfect mix of historic charm and modern convenience. The home sits in a quiet, private neighborhood within Quechee’s Historic District, just a short walk to the village green, Simon Pearce, the Post Office, Library, and the Ottauquechee River. A True Piece of Quechee History: The Mill House is one of just three original mill houses on High Street, built in the mid-19th century by the J.C. Parker Company for mill workers and their families. The Quechee village itself grew up around the power of the Ottauquechee River falls and dam, which provided industrial power for sawmills, gristmills, and ultimately textile mills. These rare homes are treasured for their classic 1½-story form, clapboard siding, granite foundations, and modest, functional design—hallmarks of Vermont’s industrial heritage. With its distinctive period features, The Mill House stands as a proud contributor to the Quechee Historic Mill District, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places. The spacious kitchen features an island for gathering, plenty of counter space, and all the essentials for easy meal prep. The dining room is perfect for shared meals, with classic New England style and large windows that let in plenty of natural light. A washer and dryer are conveniently located in the kitchen area for guest use. Each of the three bedrooms is thoughtfully designed for comfort. The primary bedroom offers a roomy bed, reading lamps, a cozy chair by the window, and a bookshelf with a selection of books. The second bedroom features a welcoming bed, a bedside table and lamp, a fan for warmer days, and vintage skis on the wall for a touch of Vermont flair. The third bedroom is set up with two twin beds, bright windows, a soft rug, and a small fan, making it ideal for kids or friends. Upstairs, the loft sitting area is perfect for games, reading, or just unwinding, with a plush sofa, lounge chair, board games, books, a dartboard, and natural light from skylights. For history enthusiasts: As you stroll through the neighborhood, you’ll have the chance to discover the other original mill houses on High Street, each with its own story and preserved architectural details. The Mill House is another of this historic trio—be sure to notice its distinctive glass-and-panel entry with sidelights and an entablature lintel, a unique feature from its circa-1850 construction. To spot these historic homes, look for their modest 1½ to 2-story scale, close alignment to the road, and classic gable-front forms. Many feature clapboard siding, granite or fieldstone foundations, and minimal ornamentation—defining characteristics of the worker-era vernacular architecture that gives the Quechee Historic Mill District its unique charm. Many of these houses retain original features (or at least their external form) and help map out the spatial pattern of how the village accommodated the mill workforce. If you walk or drive through the district, you’ll notice houses on High Street and nearby streets that were clearly built for workers: modest in scale, aligned close to the street, often with simple gable-front or gable-end forms. Quechee Lakes Rentals by Portoro uses convenient keyless entry for self check-in, details provided 2 weeks (or less) prior to arrival by email and text message. • Early check-ins or late check-outs: If the property happens to be ready earlier than the standard 3 pm check-in time on the day of your arrival, in most cases an early arrival option may be available when confirmed with the main office. Non compliance could result in sizable fines. - All guests staying at an Quechee Lakes Rentals by Portoro (Portoro Homes) are required to sign (esignature) a rental agreement and complete identity registration. - Age restrictions apply. Reservation holder must be 25 years of age. - Upon arrival, we aim to ensure your safety, proper access to the home, and guest features. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Quechee Lakes Rentals by Portoro directly. - Known damages incurred during your stay must be reported to the property manager immediately. - Before check in, we will send you detailed directions to ensure a seamless arrival. - Check-in time is 3:00 p.m. Check-out time is 10:00 a.m. - We cannot guarantee early check ins or late checkouts. When it is possible to check in early or check out late, there will be a fee for anything outside of a one hour window within our standard times. If your need for an early check in or late check out is great, your best option is to book an additional night. - Some homes have cameras for external monitoring only. - HOTEL TAX COLLECTION: In the State of Vermont and in Windsor County, all hotel and vacation rental hosts are required to collect hotel tax. We collect these taxes within the booking transaction. - Some homes offer pools/hot tubs, or access to communal pools. There is no guard around the water features when available. Use at your own risk. - This is a No Smoking property. Penalty fees for violations will apply and you may be asked to vacate the premises with no refund at the discretion of the Host. - Animals/Pets -- Dogs Only, Guidelines and Fee* Animals/pets must be disclosed prior to reservation arrival date. Only dogs are permitted in “Pet-Friendly” Property listings. Allowed number of dogs will be expressly stated in the listing and a $150.00 fee per animal/pet is required. Animals/pets are not permitted anywhere on the premises unless prior approval is obtained. Any unauthorized animals/pets at the property will result in a $150.00 per day / per animal/pet fee, and may result in your reservation being canceled, and you may be required to vacate from the Property. -- The property allows for a maximum of 2 dogs at $150.00 per dog per stay.
