Perched 800ft above sea level with panoramic ocean views from La Jolla to Catalina Island, Casa Grotto is a unique stone studio carved into the ocean view hillside of Lake San Marcos . Built in the 80's using stone from the mountain, the space was updated in 2025 with modern touches—featuring a rock shower, full kitchen, AC, and gym. Just 20 minutes from the beach, it’s a dreamy escape for surfers, hikers, and couples looking for a romantic getaway. No pets—our two friendly boxers live on-site The space Casa Grotto is a stone-built studio located on the lower portion of our private residence property—but the area is fully separate and all yours during your stay. It features a queen bed, full kitchen, and full bathroom, plus a separate rock shower with a skylight just off the bedroom. Outside, enjoy armchairs for morning coffee, a fire pit for cozy nights, and a private terrace above the space with lounge chairs and couches nestled under a pine tree. Guests also have access to a home gym—all with sweeping views of the Pacific throughout. Guest access You’ll have full access to the studio, private outdoor area, fire pit, gym, and terrace above the space. Casa Grotto is on our primary residence property, but your area is completely private and marked off by gates. Other things to note Being tucked into the mountain means we’re surrounded by plenty of nature. You’ll often hear coyotes howling when sirens pass on the street below, which is part of the unique setting here. In the hotter months, rattlesnake sightings are rare but possible, so we recommend staying aware of your surroundings outdoors and wearing shoes in natural areas. While all of this adds to the charm, it may not be the best fit for young children or for anyone uncomfortable with our dogs or nature.
