Enjoy warm patio lighting, a mountain view, and the sounds of the creek during dinner. KITCHEN: We actually love to cook, so you'll find baking sheets, cake pans, large and small pots, frying pans, even a cast iron skillet (cornbread!), a nonstick wok, and a dutch oven. You'll also find wine openers and corks, cutting boards, knives, scissors, even a cheese cutter for your charcuterie needs. Coffee & Tea station includes a Keurig plus backup drip machine, coffee grinder, tea caddy, and electric kettle. Grill drawer has everything you need including skewers. Serving platters, cups, mugs, plates, and bowls, wine glasses, everything you need to make an outstanding meal. You'll even find a bullet blender, mini-rice cooker, and seriously, the fastest toaster we've ever found. ************* Haven Creek Cabin is our family vacation getaway - we spent years searching for just the right place to come back to again and again. During our hunt for the right space we stayed in many areas in western North Carolina and Asheville before falling in love with Maggie Valley. LOCAL SPOTS: If you'd like to stick closer to home in Maggie Valley, try Joey's Pancake House for breakfast, Twisted Spoke for a casual lunch, or CALL AHEAD to see if they are serving at Homecraft restaurant in the Meadowlark Inn (it's hit or miss but worthwhile if you can catch them). OTHER ATTRACTIONS: You'll be 7 miles from the Cataloochee Ski area, as well as both winter and summer tubing spots. 15 miles to Caesars / Harrah's Cherokee Casino & Resort. Less than 3 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway (west on Soco Rd) or head a little further afield to chase the Tail of the Dragon into Tennessee, a road famous for its 318 curves in 11 miles. 11 miles east at Lake Junalaska there are 4 tennis & 6 pickleball courts, free, first come first serve. Racket rentals are avail for $5/hr. It's 1 hr & 40 minutes to Gatlinburg and Dollywood if you want to make a day trip up the awe inspiring Smoky Mountain Parkway. If you're looking to hook a North Carolina Trout, reach out to the Maggie Valley Fly Shop for recommendations. And if you still need more to do, there are always car shows and other events in the area, look for the local Maggie Valley calendar. Head to nearby Waynesville to walk the picturesque main street, try comfort food at The Scotsman (Best.Cheesecake.Ever), or for something a little more high falutin' make reservations online at Chef's Table. Pick up a book before dinner at the wondrous Wall Street Books, our favorite used bookstore, where you can also pick up a locally produced map. Head into Asheville for thrifting, furniture and antique shopping, unique restaurants and breweries, the River Arts District, and tour the Biltmore. On the way back to Maggie Valley, stop by the Western North Carolina Farmer's market and pick up some amazing fresh produce, fruit spreads and juices of every description, or some spicy / sweet butter pickles! We highly recommend a stop at Sunshine Sammies for a hand-packed home-baked ice cream cookie sandwich. Instead of taking highways, drive southeast along the gorgeous and winding 276, toward Brevard or Hendersonville or both. Favorite hikes in that direction are the walk-through Moore Cove Falls & the drive-up Looking Glass Falls, the amazing Art Loeb trail (bring a HAIR TIE, it is WINDY in the open spaces), and Triple Falls & Sliding rock (head out early or try a weekday for a less crowded experience). Stop for ice cream at the iconic Dolly's when you're ready for a sweet reward. If you're in Hendersonville, try Jump Off Rock, a great drive-up photo spot with expansive views. Try one of the many apple orchards, such as Grandad's apples in Apple Valley, then head to our favorite breathtaking winery-with-a-view, Point Lookout Vineyard, to enjoy a wine or mead tasting - look ahead on their website for band schedules too. If you're out that way, stop at the now re-opened Chimney Rock, a challenging experience - but with an elevator for those who prefer the path of least resistance. APPS WE RECOMMEND during your stay: Alltrails hiking app, both free and paid version are excellent and can help find and navigate terrific trails. AccuWeather, particularly in winter, gives timely notice of last minute snows and dangerous conditions. WILDLIFE, or - Welcome to the Woods: BATS: We LOVE our squeeky little bat buddies because bats EAT MOSQUITOS! Bats do come with bat poop. We've tried to encourage them to nest NEAR but not ON the house with limited success, but we can't eliminate that, or their poop, entirely - but we feel it's a reasonable trade-off for their tireless pest-control efforts! There should be BROOMS left on most balconies so you can sweep and move on with your day. One of our bat houses, the Batman, is visible on a tree across from the front door. BEARS: We often sleep with the windows (not doors!) open as even summer mountain mornings are brisk and cool and the creek makes for wonderful white noise. But, for your safety, please open a bedroom window rather than a door as they are situated in such as way that a bear is unlikely to surprise you unless they become capable of flight. DO NOT leave food in your car. They will break into cars, unattended garbage, etc. You may see bear paw prints on the back first floor deck. ELK: They wander through the yard, down the road, and throughout town. They hang out around Joey's Pancake house a lot. Drive carefully! The town asks that you try to maintain a min 100 yard distance and don't crowd them trying to get photos. They are pretty mellow but they are still BIG. GROUNDHOG - "Chuckles" the groundhog / woodchuck (and family). We are arguing about whether the land is ours or hers. Chuckles is wily and is winning at the moment. She enjoys brunch on the front lawn and posing for pictures. We are still unclear with regard to how much wood Chuckles is able to chuck. Note: For any reservation between November and the end of March we require all-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive Guest access Guests have access to the entire property with the exception of the locked owner storage closet. This property is located up a steep paved road that is only 3/10 of a mile long but has an 18% average grade. If you're not comfortable with steep roads, this may not be the property for you. That said, in summer we've made it up in a Toyota Camry - but winter can be challenging. An alternate route may be suggested in snowy / icy conditions. GARBAGE: Garbage must be kept in the garage due to bear activity. Cleaning staff will take garbage with them at end of stay, OR you may drop off on your own at the conveniently located facility on the way to Waynesville / Asheville.
