Other things to note Rainbow Lake is a scenic freshwater lake in the northern Adirondacks of New York, about 15 minutes northwest of Saranac Lake village. It’s known for its peaceful, unspoiled setting and is popular with paddlers, anglers, and people looking for a more low-key experience than the busier lakes nearby. Here are some key things about it: Setting & Scenery: Rainbow Lake stretches about 4.5 miles long with lots of coves, bays, and wooded shoreline. Much of it is surrounded by private camps and forestland, giving it a quiet, natural feel. The lake connects to nearby Lake Kushaqua via a narrow passage, which makes for beautiful canoe and kayak trips. Recreation: Canoeing & Kayaking: It’s a paddler’s paradise, with winding shorelines and little islands to explore. Fishing: The lake has bass, pike, perch, and other species. Swimming & Boating: Motorboats are allowed, but traffic is generally light compared to larger lakes in the area. History & Camps: Like many Adirondack lakes, Rainbow Lake is dotted with rustic camps, some over a century old. The lake has long been a summer retreat for families, with classic Adirondack “camps” and boathouses lining parts of the shore. Wildlife & Nature: Because it’s relatively undeveloped, you might see loons, bald eagles, beavers, and plenty of other Adirondack wildlife. Atmosphere: Compared to nearby Saranac Lake or Lake Placid, Rainbow Lake is quieter, more residential and camp-focused, with less of a touristy feel. It’s especially known for its calm mornings and evenings—perfect for paddling or sitting on a porch listening to the loons.
