The Tower House
The Tower House
Description
A secluded modern mountain home with a fairytale watchtower and dramatic views of the Catskills. Surranderd by 3 acres of forest but only one mile from Bearsville Theater and a 7 min drive to downtown Woodstock. Fire place, fire pit, hot tub, chef's kitchen, reading nooks. The space We truly believe this house is special, though much of that is not to our credit. It was built in the ‘80s by a master stonemason after traveling the world to learn his craft. He hauled rare stone from demolished historic buildings and constructed the tower and the massive fireplace. With the help of friends, he built the house with equal craftsmanship. Beautiful wooden beams rib all ceilings and are especially awesome in the lofty upper floors. The downstairs floors are tiled from the oak beams of a friend's barn, patterned by a local Woodstock artist. Outside, the curved deck and hot tub look out over an incredible Catskills view, while whimsical landscaping blends the structure into the forested mountainside. What was left of the construction material would become a full-sized Easter Island head at the top of the driveway, looking over the result: “a labor of love,” as the stonemason told us. We find ourselves incredibly lucky to live here and are doing what we can to keep up and enhance this special place. The grand fireplace and wood stove are fully functional (and we also have central heating and AC). These face a spacious living area, equipped with projector and Apple TV for when you’re done with the mountain view. There’s also a corner for games and reading, and another for music, with a guitar, a lyre and a record player. Sonos speakers are throughout the house downstairs and upstairs. The dining room flows into a modernized kitchen and a pantry stocked with necessities and luxuries. From there you step into the sunroom, with a desk for working or writing, some more seating and an art/drawing station with some supplies. Upstairs you will find the rooms, all with stunning vaulted ceilings. The bay window of the master suite offers wraparound views of the range, and catches both sunrise and sunset. Its ensuite is amazing, with a deep soaking tub and a giant walk-in shower. With that view, it’s like bathing in the clouds. Two other bedrooms (one guestroom with queen bed, one private) look in the other direction with a view of dense trees. A shared bathroom in the hallway has a shower with mountain views. The tower itself holds the grand spiral staircase between floors. Following that further up you reach the top of the tower, with an observation deck, and more books. Other things to note - There are no shades on any of the windows. We love waking up to the sunrise in the master bedroom but eye masks may be a good idea for sleeping in. Additionally, the showers have windows looking out to the mountain view. - Mountain property = natural terrain and wildlife. In winter, expect snow/ice; Depending on the conditions an AWD car may be necessary. - We don't have a generator! Usually if there's a storm and power outage, it takes a few hours for it to get restored, and it happens very few times a year. But it can happen, so it's important to know about that eventuality. We have the wood burning stove for heating, candles and charged LED lights, battery packs, etc. - We ask you to respect quiet hours as the area has been is a peaceful home to our dear neighbors for decades. While neighboring houses are hidden by forest, sound carries surprisingly well. This also means we cannot accept bookings for parties and events. - Our town’s permit allows us to rent out two bedrooms to a maximum of four people and violations can risk losing our permit altogether. Friends are welcome to visit but shouldn't stay over without prior agreement. - We cannot host pets at this time — While we believe they are family members, as new hosts we’ve opted to keep it simple until we feel confident about having covered the bases for everything else. - Please specify if you are traveling with children and their ages so together we can review the child-friendliness of the space!
