You have to take a boat to get there--(a passenger-only ferry or water taxi). We provide a parking space for you in Northeast Harbor. You leave your car there and take the ferry or water taxi to Great Cranberry Island. In season, the ferry makes 6 trips per day--leaving Northeast Harbor at 7:30AM, 10AM, 12PM, 2PM, 4PM and 6PM, there is a 9PM boat on certain days. That fare is $32 round trip ($16 each way) per person for adults, $8 each way for kids 12 and under. 10 trip (punch) tickets are $130.00, children = 1/2 punch. Ramps from docks to floats are fairly steep 4 hours out of every 24. We provide transportation on the island for you and your luggage from the dock to the house upon your arrival and departure. Our cars can also be used for transportation to and from the dock at other times and off-season (before June 21 & after Sept 15). In-season the free Cranberry Explorer, an 8 passenger golf cart, leaves the dock every 1/2 hour. The Red House is on it's route. The driver will let you off or pick you up when signaled. Acadia National Park Visitor's Center and Bar Harbor are approx. 8 miles from Northeast Harbor. There is a free Island Explorer bus which travels all over Mt. Desert Island, stopping at Northeast Harbor, Bar Harbor and many other locations including the airport in Trenton and Ellsworth. Although the ocean is very cold, many enjoy jumping off the dock to swim on hot days. Some like to fish off the dock, especially in the evening. That's when some guests and islanders like to gather at the dock to enjoy the view and watch the sunset. A large shared deck runs off the utility room, overlooking the ocean view. There is a small (unfinished at this writing) "Zen" garden in the space between units on the quiet side of the house. The property extends to the ocean shore across the street. There is a walking path to the shore for our guests located on the left side of the view. Other things to note The Red House Compound consists of 2 houses with a Utility Room-(location of the washer and dryer) between them: (1)The Antique Unit (nearest to the road) was built circa 1799. (2)The "New" Unit, listed as the "Island Adventure for 6" was built in 1989. It is located slightly behind and to the left of the Antique Unit. (3) The Barn Apartment (60+feet behind the 2 house units) Chong and I stay in the Barn Apartment most of the time. The Cranberry General Store, located at the dock, has health and beauty items, sundries, foods (some organic), homemade baked goods, milk, juice, soda, wine and beer. Locally caught fish can be ordered by 3PM Wednesday for pickup Friday afternoon. The store offers breakfast & lunch items and soft-serve ice cream. It's open in-season (June-August) from 7AM to 4PM, Saturday from 10am to 2PM. Hours may change. Hitty's Cafe located in the Historical Society Complex serves lunch to order from 10-4 daily. Hours and days may be subject to change. The food always gets good reviews from my guests. Prices are moderate. There is a full service restaurant on Islesford with a "5 star" chef. Standing in front of the Red House, the second strip on land visible is Islesford. The Beal and Bunker Mailboat, the Cranberry Cove Ferry and all Water Taxis go to Islesford. The fare between islands is free. Islesford also has a museum owned by Acadia National Park and several gift shops. Ferry Schedules are available on the Cranberry Isles website. 2 water taxis run at your convenience in season. I will provide phone numbers for guests. Water taxis can sometimes be shared. PETS MUST BE APPROVED. I send several pages of detailed information to all my guests.
