History & Charm: The Old Church School in Halkyn is a Grade II listed building, originally built in 1849 by the Grosvenor Estate to serve as separate boys’ and girls’ schools, replacing an earlier school demolished in 1848. It was later sold to the Diocese of St Asaph in 1912, closed as a school in 1953 when Ysgol Rhos Helyg opened, converted for commercial use in the 1980s, and until fairly recently lay largely empty. Directly opposite, the charming St Mary’s Church, built in 1878 in a beautiful Gothic Revival style, still welcomes visitors today and adds to the timeless character of the setting. In our meticulous renovation of The Old School Manor, we’ve been careful to retain many of the building’s authentic features so that guests feel both its history and its modern luxury. The exposed wooden roof trusses and traditional mullioned windows have been preserved, allowing guests to enjoy the character of the beautiful old panes still visible in the wings and frontage. The original stonework on the exterior remains intact, maintaining its Tudor Gothic charm. Some original picture frames have been retained in one of the corridors from when the building was an active school, offering gentle echoes of its past.
